Happy Independence Day everyone,

I'm mechanically inclined but new to working on bikes. I've decided to convert my only bike, a 2017 Diamondback Overdrive Pro 29er, from a 2x10 to a 1x10 drivetrain. Original drivetrain was 22-36 upfront with an HG50 11-36t cassette, controlled by a Shimano SLX shifter and Deore XT M786 Shadow Plus rear derailleur with clutch.

I decided to go 1x10 vs 1x11 in the hope of keeping my rear derailleur and shifter. After some reading, I went with the following: Wolf Tooth 32T elliptical 104BCD chainring, KMC 10 spd chain, and Sunrace 10 spd 11-46t cassette model MX3. The cassette is geared 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-34-40-46. I also purchased a 10 speed GoatLink and a longer B-screw in hopes of making it all work.

Things are not going well. I got everything installed, but the rear derailleur is hitting the 40t cog. The bike will shift to the big 46t cog, but when attempting to shift back to the 40t the chain and gear are hitting the derailleur and getting jammed. I've tried adjusting the B-screw to no avail. Is this cassette just too big for my derailleur, even with the Goatlink and B-screw?

Am I trying to do something that just plain won't work? If I am, what would you recommend I change? Smaller cassette like the Sunrace 11-42t? Different rear derailleur? Both? Goal is the widest gear ratio I can obtain while staying 10 speed if possible. I'm enjoying learning about my bike as I go but I'm afraid my inexperience here has led me to some mistakes. Any and all constructive advice appreciated. Thanks!

I tried adjusting the B-screw (which is the "longer" 25mm version) to both extremes. When I crank it all the way in, eventually the jockey pulley completely loses contact with the chain. Nothing I do with the B-screw seems to prevent the derailleur hitting the cogs problem.

Huckleberry: Why would an 11-speed derailleur work? Does it just have more "reach" to get past the large diameter cassette?

Missionary: I have a brand new chain... I think it was 116 links. I measured using the "big ring to big ring" technique (thanks YouTube) and ended up removing 2 links to get to where I am now. Forgive my newb-ness, but how would lengthening the chain help here?

Thanks for your replies.

After doing some research to set my bike up the the 11 speed 11-50 cassette...maybe, just maybe, the issue is you're using a SGS, long cage derailleur, which is for the 2X. Huckleberry is correct though, if you get a GS (medium cage) 11 speed SLX derailleur, you should be able to set that up without the goatlink. That particular derailleur is designed to handle Shimano's 46 tooth cog. I've read tons of people who have great shifting with the 11 speed derailleur and the 10 speed shifter.

I did the exact conversion with same XT derailleur but used a Sunrace 11-42 cassette,26 tooth chainring and a Shimano chain. No goat link or B screw needed and it shifts perfectly.

your chain is about 3 links shorter than mine, a tight chain will give shifting issues.

i currently run a GX mech with a 11-46 sunrace with a 32t No goat link

Previously i used a Deore 10spd mech with no issues

I have a bike built with some old parts, same 10 speed derailleur and an 11-46 Sunrace cassette, but it's the 11 speed version and I'm using a SLX 11s shifter. I also got a goat link (not from wolf tooth). I can shift without a problem, in fact it shifts better than I was expecting.
There are two major difference I notice from your setup, one is that my hanger and goat link are almost vertical, while on your setup they are almost horizontal. The other is that you are using your derailleur on a direct mount configuration while I'm using mine with a standard mount configuration.
This two differences are probably the ones that are causing you problems.

Thanks, I will try a longer chain tomorrow and see if that helps. If that doesn't help, I'll try the 11 speed derailleur. If I go that route, would the Shimano XT RD-8000 11 speed be a good choice?
