Curious what everyone is running.

Would like to know:

Inner rim width
Tire width
Tubes or tubeless
Type of riding
Additional info - wheel diameter, carbon or aluminum, tire model, are you happy with setup, other setups you want to try (bigger, smaller, ?), comments, etc

Not sure if this is the best way to go about this or if I'm leaving anything important out? If anyone has any comments or suggested additional info, feel free to comment or discuss.

For myself:

Inner rim width: 22 mm
Tire width: 2.0 claimed, ~2.1 actual
Tubes
Type of riding: These days groomed singletrack. Used to race and ride a little of everything and looking to get back to some chunkier stuff

Additional: I'm riding stock 27.5 wheelset with aluminum rims and running tubes. Tried tubeless but leaked and finally just put tubes back in and probably need to try more tire and sealant combos. Looking to build a new wheelset with carbon rims and trying to figure out what others prefer for various types of riding. Thinking around 27-28 mm inner width and 2.2-2.3" tires? Maybe try some even wider tires but I'm used to higher pressure and reduced rolling resistance and trying to get used to mushy feel of lower pressures.

I was attempting to get people to quickly post their setup and if they like it or want to change something. But maybe a normal discussion will be easier?

Anyone else?

29mm inner

2.35 front and rear. Actual width, don't know/care.

Tubeless.

Sandy and rocky natural single-track.

Short travel "new school geo" 29er.

Front is Hans Dampf.

Rear is Rock Razor.

Overall happy with the tyre setup.

Will possibly try something a bit more aggressive up front and maybe in 2.5-2.6in

30mm ID for 2.6 Bonti XR2's @ 18psi front tire. 27mm ID rim 2.3 rear tire @ 30psi.

There are a ton of threads on rim width, tire size & air pressures. You really won't know what works for you w/o some experimentation. Not to say you have to purchase every rim & tire width out there. I have found some of the best rim / tire recommendations directly from the manufactures websites , sorry MTBR.

That's a fallacy, usually lower pressures=faster as well as more comfort & control. People perceive higher pressures to be faster but their perception is misguided. Even pro roadies are going as low as the 50's on 28mm tires these days.

On 2.4 tires I'm using 20psi at most on 23-25 mm rims (too narrow but that's what I have) Tubeless for sure.

29+ FS, 35mm I.D, 3.0", tubeless, technical trails

29 FS, 31.5mm I.D, 2.5/2.4", tubeless, park bike

29 AM HT, 30mm I.D, 2.5/2.6, tubeless, general trail steed

27.5 FS, 30mm I.D, 2.5/2.4, tubeless, all of the above

The 29+ has carbon hoops. All others are Alu.

Tires:

29+ FS = Bontrager XR4's

29 FS = WTB Vigilante/Maxxis DHRII

29 HT = Maxxis Assegai/Specialized Butcher

27.5 FS = Maxxis - Assegai/DHRII

I may swap the Vigilante and Assegai (29 - FS/HT).

I also might chuck a 2.5!Aggressor (which I have lying around) outback on the HT.

I was running a Specialized Eliminator GRID 2.6 outback on the 650b rig.

But, where the bead meets the casing tore whilst riding park. Which was a shame b/c I really liked the tread pattern.

I may try the Eliminator DH casing yet...

I also probably need to change out the Exo casing rear tire for a DH casing, on the FS 29er.

I like grip up front and grip/speed out back.

Usually Exo or equivalent meets my needs.

Like I said above, park duties will require sturdier sidewalls.

If I could find pre-Addix Magic Mary's, I'd be running them on FS 29er & 27.5.

~150lb all geared up

Evil Following: 25mm IW, 2.35 Nobby Nic/Rock Razor

Ibis Ripley V3 LS: 34mm IW, 2.6 Nobby Nic

Banshee Spitfire: 29mm IW, 2.6 Spesh Eliminator/Michelin Force AM

Specialized Stumpjumper 6F, 39mm IW, 3.0 Purgatory/Ground Control

All tubeless.

Bombtrack Beyond+
WTB Scraper 27.5 i40 f & r with WTB Trailblazer 2.8 front, but measures out closer to 2.45 & Onza Canis 2.85 r, which measures closer to 2.8.

Soma Wolverine Raceface AR25 i25 with Kenda Karma Sport 29x2 tires, which I think might be true to size(never looked into it)?

30mm IW on a santa cruz 5010

Specialized 2.6 tires. Eliminator front, ground control rear. Casings actually measure 2.5.

Prior setup for years was 25mm IW with various 2.3 or 2.4 tires. Rolled tires off the rims a few times. 30mm internal is much more stable, even with the slightly wider tires.

35mm IW Maxxis Rekon 2.6, Front and Rear_Ibis Mojo 3

35mm IW Bontrager XR4 TI 2.6 Front and 35mm IW Bontrager XR4 TI 2.4 Rear_SC Bronson V2

34mm Ibis wheels with 3.0 tires on the rigid SS Stache. Tires have been WTB Ranger, Bontrager XR2, and now just for something different, Maxxis Minion DHF.

On the Tallboy 4, 30mm SC Reserve with Maxxis 2.5 Aggressor (rear) and Assegai front. New bike and these are both new tires to me--so far I think they are great.

Only tubeless.

I live in Northern New Mexico, so lots of chunk and loose kitty litter down low and in the alpine areas its typical buff organic hard pack with loads of technical climbing/descending everywhere.

29mm
29x2.4
Tubeless
CF rims, Maxxis Dissector F/R, Sandy, rooty, single track and Florida fire roads grass/mud/dirt/sand
First ride with these tires. I was running 2.35 Minion SS. I do a lot of pavement to connect trails. So far the Dissector seems to roll OK and provides superior traction. I'm trying them front/back, but may switch back to the Minion SS rear if things don't work out.
20 psi front, 23 psi rear. I'm 230lbs

I still haven’t destroyed my wheels yet, so I’m still running my skinny ass rims.

22.5 mm inner width
2.3 tires
Tire pressure depends on the terrain, anywhere from 20psi up front - 30psi in the rear.

WTB Frequency i29 rims, Front 2.6 Forekaster, rear 2.35 Forekaster. Kona Unit.

WTB Asym i35 rims, front 2.5WT Minion DHF, rear 2.4WT Minion DHR. Kona Honzo.

Only tubeless. Hopefully not jinxing myself here, but I have not had a flat in years. After a ride, I always spin the tires and give them a once over. Where I ride, pretty common to find thorns stuck in the tire. Pull the thorn, spin the wheel until sealant stops bubbling out of the hole and done. As far as trying different tire and sealant combos for tubeless, unless you were using a non-tubeless ready rim and/or tire, the system is pretty well dialed these days. I would figure out what you were doing wrong first, before attempting to fix it with different tires and sealant.

Depending on which of the three local trails I ride most frequently, there can be a combination of groomed, sandy or very loose and rocky singletrack.

Love the Forekaster combo on my Unit. Great grip in climbing, in the turns and yet rolls relatively fast for this type of tire.

I built the Honzo with a couple of the technical, loose and very rocky local trails in mind. The DHF and DHR are great for this, but compared to the Forekasters, they are like pedaling cinder blocks.

32 mm inner rim width
Assegai 2.5 WT and DHR2 2.4 WT tires
Tubes
Single track and flow, chair lifts and XC trail
27.5 wheel size
Carbon fiber rims (Nextie Wildcats)
Perfectly satisfied with this wheel/tire combo for the trail conditions around here; Rocky, rooty, loamy, and dry

27.5 30mm ID, tubeless, 2.35 Magic Mary SG soft, 16psi front, 17.5psi rear.
From singletracks to DH runs.

For driving/trail riding 2.35 Hans Dampf soft / 2.35 Rock Razor speedgrip.

Will possibly try something a bit more aggressive up front and maybe in 2.5-2.6in

You should try 2.35 Magic Mary up front.

Cool thread.

I have a pivot trail 429 and stock rims are 30mm IW. I’ve run a 2.5 dhr front and a 2.4 reckon back, which is stock. Also a xr4 2.4 front and xr3 2.4 back. Both of those are great, but curious about upgrading my wheels and would like something ideal for 2.4-2-6 Tires and I’m not sure if this is 30 or 35. Or maybe I should just stick to 2.4 and then maybe it’s 27mm-30mm?

It’s sort of confusing, some brands use 27mm for trail, others it’s 30mm. I’ve read somewhere that maxxis says wide trail tires are designed for 30-35mm. I think I is stocked the Ripley with 35mm IW rims and 2.6.

I wish I had the luxury to try more options, but’s that hard to do.

That is what I was planning on getting next [emoji106]
