Ever since test riding a 2019 Remedy 9.9 last summer, I couldn't stop thinking my 17 Fuel EX8 would climb better if it shed some weight. I know; comparing a 27.5 carbon bike to a 29 aluminum isn't apples to apples, but it bugged me the Remedy felt like it climbed easier....so I picked up a set of Mavic XA pro carbon hoops and lost 440g there. Then I found a lightly used XG1199 cassette to replace the 1150 and lost another 125g. Next I found some cheap Descendant carbon cranks and lost around 125g with them.(forgot to weigh them before installing!) Also switched the lock on grips with some ESI extra chunckies for another 40g loss. Recently ordered a cheap carbon seat too; not sure how much that will be worth, haven't weighed the seat I have now. So all together it's over a 700g drop. Obviously the wheels will make the biggest difference, but the other parts won't hurt. Can't wait to test it out! Now if it would just quit raining every other day....

Got it down to about 30.5 lbs according to the highly accurate bathroom scale. Not too bad for adding a heavier fork (Yari w/avy) and a DPX2 shock. Hopefully the Mavics will hold up; only 28 spokes but all the reviews I could find say that take abuse well and I only weigh 170. Time will tell...

Well...the jury is still out. Got a ride in today after the trails have been closed for over 2 months but they were still really damp. I almost turned around and left, the first 150-200 yards had puddles and I don't wanna be 'that guy'. After that it was just really damp and tacky. Last time I rode it was dry and dusty so hard to compare. Plus not riding for so long, I've lost some fitness more than likely. Also been working about 50 hours/week standing all day, so I was tired before even starting the ride. At least the seat wasn't bad, not quite as comfy as the Spech henge, but close.

enjoyed reading your post. looks like sensible smart ways to cut. how much have you spent? did you sell old parts?

i bought my wife a 19 remedy 8 over the winter and i want to save weight as well. she is 100lbs and the bike is 31 without stans in the tires.

i found a super cheap way to save 700g... i took off the water bottle holder. decided i would carry water for her.

look forward to hearing how it goes✌

Forgot to update but I've had several rides now in dry conditions and can definitely tell the wheels are an improvement. Didn't think it was a big difference until I figured out I was running a gear higher than I used to and it still felt easier to pedal, especially uphill!
Happy camper here, but the seat had to come off...creaked like a SOB after a few rides. At least it was cheap.
