Roval traverse 29 hubbupgrade???

I have a 2019 SJ expert. It has the carbon Roval traverse wheels. I saw a few videos of people changing from the 3 pawl system to the better ratchet system. I purchased the parts but ran into a snag. My spacer seems to be part of the axle??? It doesnt just slide off.. so ..does this apparent metal spacer come off so I can switch the system or not. Pic included.

If it doesnt..the ratchet obviously will not fit the diameter!!! Any help much appreciated.

Figured it out and it's a no go unless I change the axle too! Specialized uses this one here and it's all 1 piece.😡

Did you end up find out whether swapping the axle would have worked/allowed you to swap the internals for star ratchet ones?

Currently have the same hubs on my 2020 Enduro & hoping sapping the axle will let me upgrade the internals

How much did you spend on parts so far? And how much would you have to spend on a new axle? Just curious what this would run me to do.

I've spent about $190.00 and a new axle runs about $25.00-$35.00. Just want to make sure it will work. Never done anything like this. If I could lace up a wheel I would of bought a pair of 350 hubs. Saw them on sale at CRC for cheap.

the hub isnt a dt swiss copy like the other rovals but a formula hub. its a bad design imo as you end up preloading the bearings causing premeture wear or the cassette can move if its not. swapping the hub has been a worthwhile upgrade.

i got mine swapped out for a hope pro4 and the spokes are the same length which is handy.

agree with you.
i found that this hub needs three wrenches to set preload properly

ive gone through two sets of bearings in two summers.

the last time i checked my rear hub the bearings felt disgusting

this is probably something i will upgrade this year. would like to go onyx but man thats expensive. might look at getting a custom machined axle spacer instead. if it matched the bearing seat width, it could solve the whole problem.

so the axle has a shoulder on it. and this sits up against the nside of the hub bearing. You then have a cup and cone type nut on the hub side and a similar spacer ont he freehub side. It means you need to take up the slack in the axle or the freehub can move giving ghost shifting. too snug and and kills the bearings and too lose it can back off.

On the 2020 SJ ST Expert Specialized specs carbon wheels with stock roval hubs. No idea why. Who wants to pay up for carbon wheels with crappy hubs. Bike should at least come with a dt350 then you can upgrade to 54t if you want.

Talked to my shop where I purchased my bike and they said its not a problem if I upgrade hubs. So I got a proper set of new I9 Torch hubs on the way to set these carbon hoops up right! Little bling don't hurt either.

I keep finding this thread hoping you figured out how to get past the spacer. I recently bought a 2019 SJ Carbon Expert and wanted to upgrade internals. But have not found any solid evidence this can be done with the Carbon roval with the specialized branded hubs. Does anyone know if I can at least buy a new hub altogether and have it laced into the roval carbon wheel?

Hi All,

I am now in the same boat as some of you were last year... my 2019 SJ Expert carbon rear hub is giving me grief and basically crapped out on Sunday, I got home but the resistance felt when peddling was horrible, loosing speed on some gentle downhills whist freewheeling was odd!! after a quick glance, the hub bearings are shot on the drive side.

I have ordered some new bearings (6902 and 6903, will check the hub and freehub bearings at the same time) and will get them in before the weekend to get me going again but after reading all these fourms on the same topic, I am now also thinking a replacement hub is the way to go...

I see that @andybrad went for the Hope Pro4 as I see one can re-use the spokes etc. This is a benefit obviously, but I am a) having a little trouble finding a Pro 4 12x148 28 hole with an XD driver,, the odd one I have found is €200 plus... and b) more inclined to go to DT Swiss 350s as I am used to them and have all the DT Swiss grease to hand etc (my previous SJ had DTs so for this reason only). Just found one here in Spain for €150 (Buje-RT DT Swiss 350EXP MTB Straightp. 142/12 TA, 28 a,DB, IS 6-pernos, Sram XD - Rotoruabike)

I see @roke_mnt went to DTs so my question is:

How do I work out the Spoke length required here ? the DT swiss spoke calculator requires some dimensions of the Roval Traverse Rims that I don't have.(ERD etc)... I assume I will need new Spokes...

I guess the new spokes will make up the difference in price between the Pro4 and DT 350 that I have found, but I will end up with the hub I am more comfortable with (not saying the 350 is better than the Pro 4, just I that I know them and feel good about going this way again).

Any thoughts ? I was thinking of tackling the wheel rebuild myself as it is something I have fancied doing for a while and one of the few things left of MTB workshop stuff that I haven't tried... but I may just take the wheel and a new 350 to my LBS and ask them to do it for speed and ease ;-)
