Other than football and skateboarding in my teens and early 20s, I've never worn pads. Picked up the TLD Speed Sleeves for my old knees. I live in Texas, so I waited for cooler weather. I can honestly say that they are nearly completely unobtrusive. Two 3 hour trail rides and a 6 hour shuttle/pedal day with out any issues from a comfort standpoint. Size does matter though, so get the right size.

I was taught to bail to my knees on a skateboard half-pipe, so you practice getting comfortable hitting the deck and sliding down on plastic outer shell of the pads. The Speed Sleeves are going to be on the opposite end of the spectrum ...there is no way I'm intentionally bailing to the knees with these on but that is not how they are marketed.

Based on how comfortable these are and my concern about the actual level of protection, I'm going to pick up a pair of TLD Raids for the knees. I think I will also get some TLD Raids for the elbows.

Summary: Very comfortable, but not confidence inspiring.

Based on how comfortable these are and my concern about the actual level of protection,.
I agree. I have the next level up of TLD knee pads (the ones with the harder plastic knee caps, and mesh backing). I can attest those protect fairly well, after a few minor crashes :) They are probably warmer or more rigid than the knee sleeves though. That said, I pedal up with them on all the time and forget about them.

I've used a pair for a couple of years. They're fine for how I use them. For comfort while pedaling, I often ride with them down over my shins when not when not in a situation where I expect to need knee protection. Def NG for big knee hits.

Speed Sleeves are the knee pads I grab most often due to comfort. If I’m downhilling I use a more substantial pad. My only complaint about the Speed Sleeves is that the fabric starts to stink horribly if you don’t wash them after every ride. Horribly, as in you walk into the garage and the stench hits you. Sometimes I’ll leave them baking in direct sun to try to kill the odor but mostly I need to wash them after each ride.

^^^ I haven't experienced that issue. IDK if this will help your situation, but when I wash my kit I use Oxiclean to kill microbes and odor molecules. Borax works pretty much the same. I've even soaked stinky shoes in a bucket of warm water with it for a few hours, rinsed well, and they came out sweet!

Thinking about getting a set of these. Any feedback on sizing? Using TLD’s sizing of 4” above knee I’m 44cm (17.3”), and 6” below knee I’m 35cm (13.8”). This puts me near the upper range of a M/L for the thigh, and middle range of XS/S for the calf. Have you found their sizing chart accurate for you? Hoping to find that balance of not restricting blood flow vs not sliding down my leg. Thanks!
