I have about six hundred miles or so on my s1 wheelset. I debated on buying an entire new wheelset and spank oozy was one of my choices. However my main concern with the s1 wheelset is the Neo rear hub. In the end I have no complaints with the rims. I ride in rocky Arizona and they've been through some crap and have held up wonderfully. In the end I had my rear wheel relaced with a DT 350 for peace of mind and I saved a buttload of money over a whole new wheelset. If you ride hard or ride in the wilderness I wouldn't trust the stans hub long-term. But that's just me. Obviously I've read the same complaints you have and I prefer to err on the side of caution and durability when it comes to my rear hub. I've blown an XT hub and broke a spring or pawl on a hope hub before and it just ruins your day and leaves you walking (pretty sure I was still able to ride with the broken Hope, but definitely not with the XT)... at least with DT Swiss it's an easy trailside repair if you have spare ratchets.
Anyway long story short, the S1 rims might be a little heavier than most but I don't care and they seem super durable so far. I feel better after replacing the rear hub, that's for sure. Not sure if any of this really helps you though lol
