Interested in getting feedback from folks who switched to a coil shock. What shock they are using and how it affected the ride.

I recently (about a month ago) switched to a Marzocchi Bomber Z1 fork/ Bomber CR coil shock.

i'm still dialing the fork in, but the coil seem to be spot-on right now, the difference between air/coil is pretty evident. i've ridden coil shocks before (on a giant reign) so i knew what to expect. running a 500lb coil for me at 177-ish lbs.

The coil will make the bike a lot more planted on rough downhills, the bike, so far remains poppy and playful.

Weight, bike went up about 2 lbs, so it's now around the 33lb mark (alu stumpy).

lastly, one small nitpick, but with the reservoir on the bomber CR i can no longer fit a bottle (Small frame), although the same would've been with a DPX2 air shock, so can't really say i have much choice here.

I run the EXT Storia Coil on my 2019 Stumpy and love it! I've ran just about every air and coil shock and the EXT is hands down the best. It is custom tuned to my weight and bike which I think makes the biggest difference since I'm only 130lbs. I bounce back between my Stumpy with the EXT and Levo with Fox DPX2 and the EXT feels a lot better every time. Rides high in the travel, super plush off the top and very linear ramp up and feels bottomless.

I've been running DHX2 for a month now. I definitely like the plush feeling of the coil more. I can make my DPX2 more plush but I feel like when I do that it just blow through the travel more easily, adding token made it more harsh.

Another note, you can add a little bit of rear travel without interference. I went with a 210 x 55mm DHX2 (Stock is 210x50mm)

I'm 130lbs and can run a 375lb and 400lb EXT Storia Spring and will only bottom out when I mess up by casing and jump. I have heard all other coils bottom out easily on the new Stumpy unless you run a high spring rate which defeats the purpose.

Just the way the frame is designed, the leverage curve is made more progressive. So with progressive air shock the last part of the travel to bottoming out just felt really harsh.

For me the extra 5mm stroke and linear nature of coil made it more plush. I still bottom out the coil but it's expected (Big drop, casing jumps, etc) and it doesn't feel as harsh.

Well ordered a DHX2 today. Hopefully, should ride it next week. I don't get that much air time, maybe 2' at the most, so coil should work. Demoed an Evil Offering and a Santa Cruz Tallboy, both fine bikes in their own rights, but ultimately concluded that a coil shock would give me the cush I am looking for. Plus, it will be easy to swap between air and coil if needed.

Done it. Still need to work on dialing it for me. So far, so good though. The real question now is whether to put a coil in the fork.

500# Spring for 185# riding weight. My jumps are no more than 2' off the ground so works fine. Kept the same stroke. Gonna spend some time this we to refine the settings. Current settings are a bit too stiff to my liking.

Went for much lighter damping than recommended. Went with 7 clicks from full open for everything. Added 2 more clicks to low speed compression and rebound. Bike is pretty active but nice and compliant. No issue on my small jumps. Tracks really well on slow Rocky climbs.

I would. Currently I have stock shock which I actually like and stock Pike 160 with PUSH ACS3 coil conversion and its night and day compared to Air fork. I have two Pikes btw: Air and Coil, the coil has more traction and supportive after the 65% of travel use. Soaks up the bumps so well that it keeps the front end composed and tracking straight. The air fork gets overwhelmed going down chunky stuff at speed.

Looking at picking up a Bomber CR for my 2019 alloy SJ. What eye to eye and stroke shock do I need?
