you've obvuiosly never bent one right into your wheel...
Sure have. Ruined the wheel but at least it didn't ruin the frame. If the hanger was rigid and didn't bend easily as designed the frame would have taken the full impact.

Well all this dork disk talk got me thinking. I spent way too much time researching these and came to the following conclusions:
Conclusion #1: There are many people who say that they don't do the job that they were intended to do. So I did a test on my own bike and indeed it does not work. Not only did it allow the chain to come over the last cog, the hole in the center was too large and still allowed for the chain to slide down enough to contact the spokes and get wrapped tightly. I did this test by hand cranking as gently as possible. On a real ride with a full weight pedal stroke it would have been a real mess. Furthermore it made it hard to pull the chain back out. Needless to say, my dork disk was useless so off it came.
Conclusion #2: If the center hole were smaller - closer around the hub - it would have kept the chain out of the spokes and been worthwhile to leave on IMO.
Conclusion #3: Why don't cassettes come with a small ring above the inner cog to prevent this? Some downhill cassettes have this, why not your regular average cassette? It doesn't look bad when it's built into the cassette and wouldn't add much weight.
Before anyone says a properly adjusted der is all you need, I'll preempt it by saying anyone with that opinion hasn't bashed theirs unknowingly and then tried to shift down to 1.
