Remember, these guys are gifted athletes that have actually lost some ability due to the aging process. Not everyone is capable of that kind of performance, at any age, no matter how hard they try.

I mean that not to be discouraging, but to not be discouraged by what some people are capable of vs. what you're capable of. We're amateurs, the vast majority of us are competing with exactly one person, ourselves.
"We're amateurs, the vast majority of us are competing with exactly one person, ourselves". THAT, sir, is worthy of being printed on a t-shirt, or poster! Very percipient!

While I'm certainly competing with myself in a myriad of ways, all my buddies out there I see on a regular basis is 90% of the fun for me. Battling it out and making passes, epic conditions, etc....reliving that with them is a lot of fun.

Wow. I'm mid 40s and peaked around 4 w/kg @73kg last year and was well chuffed (picked up riding again in 2012 and racing in 2015). I'd like to believe I could continue to make gains but even if I can't, being able cement what I have in to my late 50s would be brilliant!

My best W/kg and best performances were post 50 yrs old (last year and this year in Open Age group racing). But I think cleaning up my diet and losing weight is what did it (lost about 7 pounds), despite being weaker at all my short powers (5s, 1min, and 5 minute). I am definitely racing different: not as good a starter on first hill, and picking people off as I go.

In the most recent (10/28/2018) Filthy 50 mile. race put on by Quick N Dirty group in Escondido, CA from the 55+ Age Group - the top horsepower guys put out 4.5 w/kg or greater. These guys are very fast and have the technical skills plus the hydration and fueling down for long endurance and short XC races too. You may recognize 2nd place rider as National Champ, Johnny O'Mara. Refer to the race results for the others that are on the same team from the San Diego area and are some of the top riders on the podium for races in this area. Of course these guys are still slow compared to Tinker (57 years old), who was 3rd Overall at the same race and beat them by almost 20 min. in a 3 to 3.5 hr race.

The top riders in the area are 4.5 w/kg or greater. Mid-pack is about 4 w/kg.

just to be clear, are these #s over the course of the race (seems likely but...??)

WDFH - to clarify your question and to give the OP some more info, one of the top-5 riders for this specific race podium usually has his power meter on his race bike shown for his Strava rides and is accurate with his input parameters. For this race - the power curve data was the Strava "estimated" values, no actual power meter data. For reference - the rider is 59 yrs, weight is 160 lbs, and height is 6 ft. 1 in.

For this specific race (51.2 miles, 3200 ft. of climbing, relatively flat for an mtb event), the Strava "estimated" power data was the following from the curve:
1 min - 6.06 watts/kg (440 watts)
5 min - 4.67 w/kg (339 w)
8 min - 4.62 w/kg (335 w)
10 min - 4.57 w/kg (331 w)
20 min - 4.28 w/kg (311 w)
1 hr - 3.66 w/kg (265 w)
2 hr - 3.39 w/kg (246 w)

FWIW: Using the 8 min value from the race data and recognizing that this is from the Strava "estimated" power curve, the estimated training FTP would be 4.2 watts/kg. He did not win the race by any means - but for 59 yrs old (soon to be 60) is considered one of the top riders in this area, is always on the podium, and is in the 50+ Age Division. He trains diligently 11 months of the year, races the longer endurance xc races such as 4, 6, 8, and 12 hr events, including the Breck Epic, Park City P2P, BC Team Stage, Leadville, SoCal Endurance Series.
