Trying to upgrade wife's bike to add a dropper post. Its a 2016 Niner Jet RDO with a SHimano XTR 2X10 want to go to a 1X11 to clean up handle bar to add dropper post. Its has a 11-36 on rear and 38/26 rings up front. Was going to do a 1X12 but way too expensive since we have a Chris King hub with shimano on it now. Can I use existing cranks to do a 1X11. She currently likes to use the 26 ring when we are hitting harder trails. Her drivetrain is about a 1 1/2 years old now and I feel it is time to change it anyway. Thanks.

You can definitely keep the existing cranks. Just get a 3rd party narrow-wide chainring, although I'm not sure if a 26t will be able to fit, however. I think it depends on the BCD and spider?

The simple answer is this... just buy a new 11spd cassette, RD and shifter, then either use the existing 26t ring, or upgrade to something a bit bigger and with a NW profile to help stop chain drops.

The long answer...Have you maintained the drive train, changed the chain before it was too stretched or have you let everything wear that you need to replace everything? If you've maintained the drive train, then I suggest sticking to 10spd and just buying a new wide range 11-40 cassette and pairing that with the 26t ring.

Either way, know that she will spin out that 26t and even a 28t ring with either setup on the faster DHs or any fast smooth flat/flowy trails you can built speed on. Also note, that for Shimano, if you want, you can buy a new 11spd RD and it will work just fine with 10spd if you wanted to just give a 1x setup with 10spd as I described a go with current parts before spending to go to 11spd.

Hey, Thanks for the responses, drive train was maintain but its a been used a lot. I been reading up on this and was thinking now that possibly a 30t ring with the shimano 11-46 11 speed might be good. Still researching. Thanks for all the helps so far.

Something like that would probably be pretty good. 30/46 is even more granny than 26/36, so you'd be good there. You lose quite a lot on the other end though. You might try a 32 in the front unless she's never on her hardest gear.

You can also get 10 sp, 11-42 or 11-46 cassettes. Garbaruk and Sunrace make them. Not quite as smooth as 11 speed, but you may not have to get a new derailleur.

Agree, if 26/36 was low enough then a 32/46 would be the same gear. A 30t might be better though because she'd have a little easier gear and 30/11 is a plenty big gear for most people and most trails.

I converted my 2x10 by installing a Sunrace 11-42 and an AB 26t NW. this put my front ring on the inside 64BCD position. But, at my age and the type of riding I do, my chain is mostly in the middle to large cogs making a great chan line. If I’m going fast down hill, I’m coasting.
