Hi there,
I used to ride a 2004 cannondale badboy ultra either with 26x2.1 wheels or 700x19mm. I am 5'7'' tall and I ride a frame size small with ETT=56.6cm and a very short stem (35mm I guess) which fits me perfectly.
I am now moving to 29er plus due to claimed advantages.
However I have doubts about frame sizing. I was thinking on a carbon trek stache. Trek recommended size is a 17.5 with a ETT=61.1cm for people 5'3''-5'7'' tall.
I was wondering if a trek stache 15.5 wouldn't be preferable as the ETT=58.3cm, thus much closer to my old cannondale but above it.
My concern is that Trek sizing chart recomends size 15.5 for riders bellow 5'3''.
I tried to demo a stache but the bike does not exist in Portugal.
I hope I can hear your expertise
Regards

It looks like the Cannondale's run a bit big, and I can tell you from experience that Trek runs a bit small. My wife is 5'6" and rides a 17.5 Trek Fuel comfortably. My daughter is 5'4" and can ride it comfortably too.

Here in Portugal, we only have very small retailers. There is no fitting machine.
I also looked for the small surly krampus geometry numbers, and salsa woodsmoke, and they are very similar to the trek Stache 15,5. However, surly and salsa small frames are recommended for much taller persons

Top tubes are getting longer these days. Get the 17.5 bike.

As requested, here's a picture of me on my 17.5 Stache. Finally got some warm weather in Texas. I'm 5'7" (67 inches). I've got a 45mm stem and my flat bar has a 9 degree sweep. I think I've got a pretty up-right riding position. After looking at the picture, I think I need to slide my seat back on the rails a little.

Moving your saddle fore/aft isn't the way to fit your reach or riding position. Your saddle position should dictate where your knees are positioned over your pedal spindles when your feet rest on the pedals.

With your pedals level and your feet on the pedals, drop a line and weight (plumb Bob) over the top of your knee down to your foot. The weight should be right over your pedal spindles for proper efficient pedaling.

If you are too upright at this point, you need a longer stem or longer frame.

Your position looks okay to me. I like an upright "trials" position though because I like wheelie drops, chunk hopping, etc...
