Hi, i am new to MTB. A year ago i bought a used hardtail, 26 in. SWorks with a Rockshock SID, 27 speeds, in good shape, alu frame that i like. It is all stock, prediscs. I am wondering how old it is? I might just use it as a backup, for winter, going to the grocery or inve$t and make it my main bike.
I am 60 YO, without a car, i ride daily so i am planning on 3 bikes, on the process of selling,(5 now) so a fat for our 4 winter months, probably my 11 speeds 29 in hardtail and this oldie. I like climbing, the 26 and 29 are fun to ride, the 29 is carbon SRAM X01, 10-42 i went fom a 32 to a 28 in front. Sorry no pic, it is yellow with some red.
Thanks!

That like saying "I have a ford, it's green, what year is it"!
Well, since stock, with sids and 9 speed, its not M900 or M980 or M9000, or M950, it'll be M951/2/3 or M960 or M970. look up those and see what matches and It'll give the approx year (usually to around 4 or 5 years) then google sworks HT's for those years to see what matches..

Or just look for the date stamped on the parts (along with serial that tell the series (M9xx) that'll give approx date of bike.

Thanks, i understand i did not provide enough for an exact year but someone might know that from X date they were making 10 speeds or discs brakes so i would know it predates let say 2003 or 1998. I will look for those #s and figure if it will be worth it to invest $$ on it like maybe wider rims for 2.6 tires, now they are 2.0 continental getting quite worn.

yeah well 9 speed ran from M951 through to M970 (so, 97-2010ish?) and discs were an option from M960 onward, so 1999 I think...but frame started having disc tabs quite often in the late90's and werepretty standard (especially on high end stuff, from 99 onwards, having both tabs and canti bosses).
But just look at the bits and look up the different versions and tell us which, M950 is like dark matte grey, m960 is glossy grey, M970 is a combo of bar aluminium/matte grey.

Also, old frame (depending how old), a 2.6 tyre may not fit, usually 2.2 was a big tyre back in the day.

It is 952, i will ask around here for estimates but i hesitate investing because the resale value will not be there. On the other side i have the range of a 12 speeds with very affordable chain and cassette. The fork and frame have lots of clearance. It is 23 pounds. I weight 145 pounds and do not feel the need for discs brakes. Thanks.

The frame is not disc ready but the fork is. I emailed continental tires and i think i will not really invest, simply replace my 2 worned tires 26x2.0 by 26x2.4 that fit on my wheels. Thanks!

952, the coolest of the cool then! If its in great condition you can sell 95x stuff for reasonable amounts. But if is working fine, no real need to replace it, it all works very well. All depends on what you want i guess, I still run 3x9 on a few bikes and prefer it that way, lots of range, only issue is replacement new stuff is getting less and less.

anyway 952 runs from 1999 to 2002, so thats a 3 year bracket to look in. Looking at the google images, the 1999 S-Works HT has yellow frame (M4 version), M95x stuff and red RS SID forks... look similar to this it?

2000 and 2003 seems to be red and 2001/2 seem to be red/white. (of course there can always be other colours, thats just a quick search...but my money's on 1999
