Posted in the Mexico forum too ... anyone familiar with any mountain biking down there. I found some stuff about El Pinacate online... looks like some of the AES guys did some camping and biking down there. Going down with the family but will have some time to myself. Anybody with firsthand (or secondhand) knowledge of trails or routes or possible contacts.

At lowtide there's nearly 10k of spectacular wet-sand riding from town to Bahia Morua. Pancake flat but so lovely. The tall dunes at the east end of the strand are fun to session, too.

I've also done a little road riding on my cross-bike around town and out into the desert along the local highways. Charming in a sense (we're not in Kansas anymore), but overall not exactly an experience that engenders a sense of safety or well-being. Pretty sure the Pto. is still a few years away from installing its first bike lane.

I can help, I am afaik the expert on riding down there. Send me a pm with your phone number. Way too much detail to type. or view the Rocky Point section of my blog chollaball.net.

I would suggest looking at riding Elegante Crater from the park entrance at Pinacate Reserve. After you climb to the crater, you can loop around the whole crater and go back down.

Also, there is riding right in town at Whale Hill and out by Laguna Del Mar. Go see the guys at Exodo Bikes for intel. They are at Guillermo Prieto
Puerto Peñasco, Sonora.

Also, as alluded to, you can definitely hit the sand at low tide if you have a fat bike.

that's cool I did not know about that shop. Do you have an address or cross-street, not on their FB page.

I rarely make it that far east in town, so never been to LAguna Del Mar. What is it like?

Whale Hill is fun, and the only elevation in town. Dirt roads up either side, some very sandy kinda poorly-laid out trails crisscross part of it that may be on private property. Its a great view, but doesnt take long to ride all over it.about 4-5 years ago a jump line was built on it, but its in very poor condition now and I wouldnt hit it.

RockyChrysler - you can ride the beach from about .5 mile inside Las Conchas. east of that heading through Mi Playa the rocks are really big and extremely hard to navigate safely. But heading SE you can go all the way into the estuary at the right conditions. I dont believe you can navigate around the port to Sandy Beach. I have never ridden the Sandy Beach beach, just some of the back roads around there.

There is a bmx park near the Sam's Club in the municipal complex. I've heard there is another one near Sandy Beach but never been. Town riding is a lot of fun if you enjoy curbs and other urban challenges. The road to Caborca you can spin for miles but its not very safe imo. Dont bother with the dirt roads through the estuary - there are a few sandy routes you can fight through, but the rest gets very sandy and alternates with death mud.

Exodo is close to La Curva. On Guillermo Prieyo North of Kino boulevard. The area around Laguna del Mar actually had hosted the one race they they have down there. Trails all over the place... maybe a bit better than whale hill but not much. Not a ton of info on RP but www.mtbsonora.com has good info on riding and races throughout the state.
