Looking to figure out if I have a medium or a long cage derailleur. There doesn't seem to be any identifying number on it, except the particular one I have is Type 2.1. I currently have a 40t cassette on it, and i'm wondering if I could go to 42 - however the b screw is almost maxed. Can anyone help?

I have a long cage. Comparing your picture to mine it is definitely not a long cage. When mine is in the locked position you can still see the S in SRAM. It probably is not designed for a 42, but then again it's probably not designed for a 40 either.

I swapped from medium to long cage on my Kona Rove to accommodate a 11-42 cassette and interestingly the "long cage" Rival 1 derailleur doesn't have a longer cage, the distance pulley to dropout screw is what's different. Yours is a medium cage.

Thanks so much!

It's really too bad they dont just write on it some how ha ha

it's probably a medium if the b screw is maxed out. On Sram 1x derailleurs, the difference between medium and large is not the cage length itself but rather the offset of the upper pulley (the cage has the same length!). The large derailleur has more space to fit a 42 or even 46T sprocket

rather confusing if you were only used to Shimano derailleurs in the past. Even worse, with Shimano 11speed derailleurs it's the exact opposite: the medium cage GS has a greater pulley offset making it the better choice for 1x drivetrains

Sure it took me along time to do so and this thread is useless given that it is that simple. So I posted so that some future me with a completely unlabeled and undecernable derailier will know to go type it into the web site. Seemed the right thing to do? But clearly you are smarter then I. Maybe hang a thread with no answer and a bunch of ridiculous conjecture is better.

I think after 4 years they might have figured this out already.
