Stans vs DT Swiss?

Looking at two bikes. Both have almost identical builds other then the wheels. Niner has Stans Neo/ZTR ARK MK3. Intense comes with DT Swiss M 1900 Splines. Wheels will be used for trail riding and some endurance races.

Are the Stans the better wheels? They are lighter and cost more if bought sepperate.

Ultimate solution - take DTswiss wheelset and buy Stans rims separately, then put Stans rims on DTswiss hubs and sell DT rims. Best from both worlds

I guess this is subjective. Had several local wheel builders say they like the DT Swiss rims better as they hold spoke tension better. I have both DT Swiss 481s and Flow Mk3 and so far both are holding up great.

It has been a long time since I even considered a DT rim. Apparently they have come a long ways recently, but I am still a fan of the tried and true Stan's especially since the MK3 rims came out. That said, it isn't that easy to find good things about Stan's hubs, whereas I love DT 350's (and 240's I am sure, but I can't afford them).

The freehub on the DT Swiss M 1900 wheelset is a 18 step pawl freehub, not the legendary ratchet freehub. Still reliable but no way to change the engagement ratchet as in the 350/240 hubs.

I've always had good luck with Stans wheelsets, though I've never dealt with the Noe hubs. I believe the Stan's set is lighter with wider rims. If that's the case, I'd go with the Stans.

Neither set of wheels is anything to write home about, IMO they're both pretty mediocre. The Stans set has a questionable hub that even I've managed to break (the only hub I've broken in over 20 years, and I have 3 sets of the XT hubs that everyone else is breaking) while the DT is heavy and uses thoroughly budget parts (it's laced with straight gauge spokes FFS).

Buy the bike that you like better, either way you'll be on a new wheelset by next year.

Good point. I hadn't noticed that there were two different bikes involved.

+1 for ignoring the wheels and choosing based on the bike you think rides better (aerius is right, they're both pretty meh).

I figured both were run of the mill. Just curious if one of the two was junk.

Stans are on new Jet9 RDO. DT are on the Intense Primer. With the info you guys gave me. If I go the Jet route, I may get the Jet with the Stans in 27.5 and then pick up a nicer 29 set for XC.
