Went over there friday am to check it out for the first time. Ended up driving around for over 30 minutes just trying to find parking that wasn't permit required or would get me a ticket and finally gave up. The trails look like they will be pretty good and all, but nothing is worth that. If anyone has any secret parking tips so I can actually ride this place it would be much appreciated.

Park a mile away and ride there :) The parking situation is really pretty bad, especially for the lower trailheads.

One thing you could do is park at one of the other trailheads, like the one about 3/4 of the way up on the right, or the one just as you crest to the top, there are usually very few cars at either of those. The bottom area is always crazy and is heavily patrolled so it's not worth chancing it.

I normally ride from my house about 2 miles away, but it's tough to find a parking spot if I want to hike or jog there.

Yeah. Im coming over from Brea so I really don't want to have to ride a but just to get to dirt. Was looking at a map today and it looks like I can park at a trail head up on the side near 60 over by a middle school. That would be even more driving but maybe easier parking

The entrance by 7th st is fenced off and you can't get in that way any more, if that's the one you were thinking of.

I've only been there twice but we exit 7th,go all the way up and park next to the school the top entrance is closed but you can get to the trail through that little 2/3 car parking spaces they have there, that is open. Hell of climb though :)

Yep. This is where I start, too. Climb sucks, but I hate trying to find parking on the Whittier side.

Works well to park at William Penn Park. Head north on Canyon Drive, passing by the college, and hop onto dirt for a bit. Peel off at Philadelphia Street and jog over to the trailhead via Finngal, Hadley, Alta, Broadway, Alta and Beverly. It's an easy two-mile warm-up.

Route that works well with this parking spot: Head up the canyon and climb up Sumac and Skyline. Hit up the 7th Street Loop counterclockwise. Drop Rattlesnake and climb Escalator. Cross Turnbull, ride up and over Workman Hill and descend the Cow Trail. From the bottom of the Cow Trail, follow the trail out of the canyon and back to William Penn Park. Stats: 12.5 miles with 2,300 feet of elevation gain.

If you want more, you can climb up Workman Ridge and get in a 2nd run down the Cow Trail before heading out of the canyon back to your car.

Rode this route last Sunday. First time I've ridden there since the Orange Grove access was closed off. The new (to me) pinch points on the 7th Street switchbacks seem like a good idea, although you can see that bikers and/or hikers are already creating paths around them. The east side descent on that loop is much less of a braided mess than it used to be. Rattlesnake was really overgrown. PO was really encroaching on the steepest pitch of Escalator right before the road crossing. The Cow Trail was in fantastic shape, probably the best I've ever seen.

I'm headed there this weekend. I see here it says the 7th Street entrance may not be open. I've heard mixed reports.

I also see A-Line is closed to bikes.

I'm considering either:

Park at Orange Grove, up Ahwingana (spelling?), down 7th Street, over to Rattlesnake, Escalator to Turnbull (then maybe back to the car if my buddy is tired), down Worsham, back up Workman and back to the car.

or

Park at hadley, get to Workman or Rose Hills somehow...not sure I see where it picks up the trail, then up and over to 7th street, Rattlesnake, Escalator, and down Worsham back to the car.

I access it from east. No one really know about that side. Little climb up too cow trail. Then climb back up to top where can connect it via the road to hit rattle snake, 7th loop. I try to avoid the hikers and east side is always nice. I gave up riding A-line or anywhere near water tank years ago.

Do you mean the south east by Holmes? The fire road looks to go right to cow trail.

Can you confirm what streets you park on? I read about the permit only limits and it seems like a nightmare to find a legal place to park there.

I usually park on Greenleaf/ Beverly (permit parking begins past Greenleaf) or I will sometimes park at the pullout near the top of The hill (Turnbull Canyon/ Skyline Dr). Not nearly enough parking at the trailhead so I rarely even try to find parking there anymore

I understand they have new "hours"? 9a-5pm - and they have a very anti-bike attitude.

Apparently, some entrances are blocked, and people are making it difficult to navigate the trail by bike. (read this on a group I belong to in FB)

I'm just using Powder Cyn now, shorter not as challenging, but you can get a good work out. I think Turnbull has more hikers.

When I rode last weekend we saw very few hikers on the 7th Street loop and the trail down to the school/trailhead. I imagine the West side is much busier with its mellower trails. From what I could tell, parking and riding up from that side is pretty basic Fire roads. For the better MTB trails parking on the east or SE makes more sense.

Yes, Never have had a problem. Never have seen signs about permits. It does say no parking on frames Ave for utility access. But homes ave is okay as far as I know. This side of Turnbull is hacienda heights not Whittier so different rules I believe. I personally haven't parked there in awhile. I have just been connecting powder canyon to Turnbull via official trail.

Where do you connect to Turnbull? I go to Powder, take the single track that drops you off at the park and return back up "The hard way" to the towers and back down to Fullerton Rd. Thanks!

Well if you start in powder canyon. Take fire road all the way up to radio tower and keep heading all the way to the hacienda entrance on the big fire road. Then there is a hidden but official single track going down right side of hacienda. Then left turn through the tunnel under hacienda. Stay on the trail to get to tunnel under colimia. Ride the single track between the houses until your at Turnbull entrance homes ave. Its all one giant park linked together.

Name of trail: juan bautista deanza national historic trail
Open your strava and do segment explore you'll see it.
