And here's something new from Surly...

Can't ride much anyway. Chain is just under 1/2 link too short if I remove an inner/outer. How about 30 x17? Still be a touch easier than 32x18 and would allow me to keep the big meats out back.

SS is complicated all of a sudden.

I'm also in possession of a Ranger 3.0 Tough that might just get the call to the big leagues tonight. Give me a chance to try the Crux on the ECR, or tomorrow H-spam could play with the Crux.

No s***? It didn't work? How does removing two teeth and two links not equal the same thing? Oh well, probably should do 30x17 if you have the cog.

Nope, no 17. 30x17 is lower than 32x18 but not by enough probably.

I won't let the chainring lie unused but...I'm saying screw the Crux for now and am popping that Ranger on the rear! 32x19 is the closest to the gear I want to run and I can make that happen. Kinda feel like H-spam over here, and just like him I'll take the time to try the Crux on the ECR just so we know.

You still could make it work on a half link chain if you said the chain is off by a half link!

Apparently I need more patience and bigger kwaads!
Ideally I'd like to go from 53.2 gear inches down to 50.

Couldn't get the Ranger even close to mounted on the RH but that would have allowed 50.4 gear inches. Even seeing that puny 3.0 tire flopping around on the rim was enough to make me rethink that route. I'd love to stay with the Crux but doesn't seem to be working out.

Fatties fit fine my arse!

Okay I made an inappropriate looking mess at the bike shop but now have 32x19 with Crux front tire and Ranger (Tough version, which I assume refers to the mounting process)rear tire. Of course now the Tuggnut doesn't work in either hole but I don't care. Wailed on the bolt and we'll see what happens tonight. Should be fine.

Post ride I may indulge another round of tire fighting and try the spare Crux on the ECR. Probably threaten to sell all my bikes tomorrow!

As expected the Ranger was fine. Traction was fine on the climbs and I hardly noticed the difference elsewhere. I've got years of practice running bald rear tires so the small knobs were plenty.

32x19 was a great improvement. I could make most of the gnarliest climbs around on 32x18 but now I don't have to scream obscenities and totally crack myself to do it. Better yet I can now even go to 32x20 or 30x19 or...nearly whatever I want.

H-spam, maybe I'll still grab a set of longer bolts for the RF chainring. Also, I think you are right. I do want a go fast machine but I still think the WED could be that. As sweet as your KM is I've (nearly) given up on anything smaller than 3.0 tires and the WED geo seems to suit me.

Big ride Sunday--Beetle Bailey has an idea so I'm following him.

3:45 am. I should be asleep.
Normally work night shifts, now on days. So I should be asleep.

But in a few days I'll start a grand adventure.
Can't stop thinking about gear, food, clothing.

There are really reasonable tools to travel over singletrack. But I often take my SS. It's not always reasonable, but it's what I choose first usually.
I take it when I shouldn't, it's the often the perfect tool.

To use a pack raft on the Grand. 11 days of food stuffed into it. Clothing. It'll be cold.
There won't be any packing of the pack raft. No overland trekking.

Just big water, quiet, dark, empty. Not many people. No motors. No electronic sounds.
It's the wrong tool for the job.
It's 5lbs of vinyl plus other debris.
It's more than Powell had. I have two arms, he had one.
It'll be the perfect tool for the job.

There's a place called Point Nemo. It's the land mass that's furthest from any other land.
So sometimes the closest people are actually those in space.

Go ride.
Winter won't last forever.

Some little thing between Lake Powell and Mead.
Dunno- 240 odd miles or so?
No wooden dorys. Hopefully no mold in the flour. Or what was it? Formaldehyde in the biscuits?
The ancient equivalent to white gas in your food?

There will be a few arms nearby for me to lean on but I imagine that it'll be hard for them to reach me as my boat likes to spend much of it's time upside down.
Not sure it's steering system was properly installed.

Yep, Some side hikes and such planned. One boater headed out w/ us has written a book on such side canyons. Will be a taking a light harness and debris for some rope work.

I traded emails w/ QBP, Monkey Nuts are (no surprise) pushed back. In his words "a few months".

I didn't write any books but did spend many months destroying tamarisk in all the side canyons that have water. Really can't beat that place. What time should I be at the Ferry?

Back to the WED--as much as I like riding the bike I'm still feeling bummed every time I see that puny Ranger on the rear. Might have to break down and let H-spam and his spare time/parts have a go. 32x20 will fit, you can swap to the pedal of your choice.
