Haven't found this covered yet but wanted to bring up the topic for discussion. The '17 XTC Advanced 29 in the bottom trim "3" version is $1850 retail. That seems like a steal...

If I'm reading this correctly, it's the same "Advanced-grade" carbon fiber frame as the higher trim models up to the $8k 0 model.

One would expect the frame alone to be near this $1850 price point if sold as a frame only option.

What's your thoughts? Is this the best deal going for an entry level race bike?

Yes its a good deal for a carbon racer. I bought last years bargain carbon racer- the 2016 xtc 3. ($2,100 sticker price). The only major differences between the 16 and 17 year models is the 2016 is Deore shifting and Rock shox 30 gold. The 2017 model has sram nx 1x11 and suntour radion.

I would much rather have a decent fork and components than a carbon fiber frame. Why does an entry level racer need a carbon frame? For the same price the Trek Superfly 6 comes with a Reba and SRAM GX (buy a 32T chainring and you have 1x11).

The 17 is a lot different from a 16. One is 148 Boost with space for 27.5+ tires and one is 142 with no space. But look carefully at the reach numbers. This is a s.h.o.r.t front half frame which may need an old school long stem to fit anyone without a very short torso. Too bad.

You make a very good point. From another thread, it seems the Giant weighs a bit more than 26lbs. That's about one pound more than the alloy Superfly 6 with better components.

For me though, the carbon Giant seems to be a better basis to build from as components wear and upgrades occur. I would assume the carbon giant frame is lighter than the trek alloy.

And, the 27.5+ ability is very enticing. I'd love to have two wheel sets for whatever I was feeling that day.

Plus, I have a small company that produces carbon fiber jewelry so the material is dear to my heart!
