Hi,

I am looking to get a new mountain bike and these two have seemed to be the best options in the budget I am working with as an entry level bike.

I already put the money down to order a Specialized Rockhopper but for $90 more I can get the Sport model and I am having a hard time deciding whether it is worth the extra little bit or not.

From what I've seen, the differences mainly lie in the following areas with the biggest difference being the hydraulic brakes in the sport model:

Fork, Inner Tubes, Crankset, Shift Levers, Rear Derailleur, Front and Rear brakes, and the grips.

Would you recommend I just bite the bullet and put the extra $90 into this bike for an entry level bike? I plan on using it mostly for city riding with occasional trips (1-2x per month in the beginning) to the mountains out here in Phoenix. If the differences are worth the $90 then I don't mind getting that model if it may be a better option in the long term.

Thanks for the help.

Spend a little more now as the parts are a good level better on the Sport and would cost you more then $90 to do on your own. IF you can skip some meals/pull some more money the comp is a much better bike with better parts that will serve you better as your skills get better.

Do you have friends who ride? IMO, secondhand bikes are the way to go for trying out MTB.

The Sport has a Suntour coil spring fork designed without rebound damping for bike paths and gravel roads. It has plastic bushings inside. It's prime purpose is to look like a mountain bike fork. Going used could get you an air fork bike for better performance.

Yes, you can get a much better value used. But how many beginners can determine a good deal vs. a bad, good fit vs. bad, good bike vs. bad? There's too much out there, it's overwhelming.

Pay the extra $90 and get the better bike.

Certainly it's nice to have some help in looking at used bikes. But since they cost a third to half of MSRP and drop a ton of value when one buys them, they're really lower risk propositions IMO.

And, I'm casting my mind back to when I was riding something on the level of the current Rockhopper and my friends were spending the same on used bikes. I'm happy for them, but my bike was pretty frustrating to own.
