I just got this bike from a friend and want to start tearing it apart and upgrading. I can't find any information on the BB size or specs other than the OE is a Power Spline SRAM unit.

I want to go with either a SRAM X.9 or a XT crankset.

What bottom bracket and Crankset would I need?

Power Spline bottom brackets are threaded bottom brackets (verses a pressfit bottom bracket). You need either an XT or X.9 crankset and a threaded bottom bracket that fits the crank you decide on. So for the XT it would be a Hollowtech II bottom bracket and for the SRAM it would be a GXP bottom bracket.

So, I have a 2001 Raleigh that I installed a 2005 Race Face Evolve DH Crank in with external BB for a 67mm shell. Do you think its a good crank to install in my trek? or would a XT or x.9 be a better solution?.. Thanks for the response!

All depends on how much you want to spend. Performance wise, they'll be similar. I prefer schimano, but I'd ride RF or SRAM just the same. I think the biggest question is finding quality cranksets that use this size of crank axle. You'll find deore and SRAM x5 no problem. Trying to find XT or X.9 will be a challenge.

Aren't all Shimano cranks 24mm and use a Hollowtech II bb, regardless of model? I am confused by your statement above. You can adapt a Shimano or 24mm spindle crank to any BB standard, provided you use the correct BB, can't you?

It's more of an argument of the hollowtech/GPX standard vs. the press fit standard. I thought XT left hollowtech behind, but I'm wrong. Looks like you can still get XT cranks with hollowtech, which is good for the threaded bottom bracket crowd (which I hope to never leave).

And the hollowtech/GXP/RF sometimes use slightly different external bearing designs. Some work with each other, some don't. I think RF will work with shimano (both are 24mm), but I know GPX uses a different diameter between their drive/non-drive side (24mm/22mm). Because they can and they don't want to play well with others.

Spot on with that. RF and Shimano cranks and BB are interchangeable. But Sram is not. I use a RF road crank on my road bike with a Shimano BB. But my RF crank would not fit with a Sram BB.

Well not really threaded vs pressfit, in regards to Shimano. The same cranks fit both Hollowtech BB and pressfit/BB96 BB, they are not different cranks, just different BB interfaces.

For instance I took my old Race Face Ride cranks off my threaded BB bike and installed them on my FS bike with a BB96 BB. Same crank just different BB.

First thing, if your spending money, crankset is the last place to bother upgrading. Changing the crankset is basically not even an "upgrade" as your stock one will work just as well, only thing to gain is weight loss in the location on the bike that has no effect on riding performance.

Wheels and forks first on that bike.

As for crank compatibility:

Threaded bottom bracket, 63/73shell length/ spindle length. That's all you need to know there.

Your current bottom bracket is not compatible with 99% of the newer cranks on the higher tiers anymore. Most use some form of hollow spindle.

Bottom bracket needs to match with manufacturer of the crank.

Sram is not in any way compatible with shimano or raceface.

Raceface is ONLY compatible with shimano bottom brackets IF THE CRANKSET IS NOT RACEFACE CINCH (with the exception of Aeffect line, turbine on up will not fit shimano bottom brackets).

Great info but to not cause confusion for the OP, you mean 68/73 BB, not 63 right?
