My Tourney derailleur on my Genesis GS29 lasted for a good two months of hard riding(hard because I am old and fat). When it kept throwing my chain off onto the spokes I decided to upgrade to a $16 Sunrace derailleur. Once I screwed all of the adjusters all of the way out it would actually shift. But, after a week and a half, it twisted out of joint so badly it would not shift at all, and constantly ground gears. The thing that I like about this derailleur is that I could easily twist it back to where it was-except the jockey gears do not line up, but it seems to work fine.

Which do you prefer?

Also-since I am posting about components on the wrong forum-I am also real happy with the Vitesse front fork on my bike. I hear it bang once in a while so I think it works. Really needs a new front fork-but I already invested nearly $200 into a $175 bike. Enough is enough.

Tourney isn't all that bad that it should be throwing the chain into the spokes and getting out of adjustment so fast that you're grinding gears. It has some play, but on an 7 or 8 speed, it is fine. Sounds like the OP really needs to get the limit screws and shift cable adjustment dialed in a little better. Maybe run some Teflon plumbers tape around the limit screws so they don't move around.

I recognize the trollerama-lama-ding-dong-shoo-bop-doo-whop

But I'll just add this verse-

My wife's hybrid has an uber-cheap Tourney on it. And dang if that thing just won't die. It's all about the use something sees, I guess. My 1995 XT rear derailleur on my VRC lasted 20 years. Some hard use. Some light use. Some in-between.

When they shift nice for ya with minimal time and expense, ya keep 'em going. When they don't, sadly, you gotta put 'em down. If you can't do it, have a friend do it for ya.

Not on the subject of derailleurs, but Sunrace has some really nice higher 32nd cassettes. I used one on my cross bike, 10spd 11-28, and now that I upgraded to 11 spd, I use the 11-32. I got the 11-42 for one of my friends who just upgraded to 1Ă—, he really can't tell the difference from his old setup, as far as shifting goes. I think they are just as nice as any Sram or Shimano cassette, probably made in the same factory.

What sort of weight are they? Not a weight weener but my ten-speed is not light as it is so I'm reluctant to put heavier bits on without good reason.

you're mad it broke after a few uses!?
I didn't know I was mad. Hum. The Tourney derailleur is on a junk bike that I could not guess how old it is. It got so loose and wobbly that adjustment was not the problem. I am running a 34 tooth sprocket and the bike is not set up for that-does not have a derailleur hanger, so the derailleur is pushing up against the sprocket bending the new derailleur. I was actually trying to inject humor here but it would help if what I was saying was funny.

I had a delivery next to the bike path yesterday. Saw a nice looking Giant with a pretty good sized rear gear(wasn't a 10 speed)had a Shimano XT derailleur, and hydraulic brakes. Didn't look like and expensive bike, but the tires were between a hybrid and mountain bike tire for size, kind of made it look cheap.

Got a pic? curious how you put on a derailleur without a derailleur hanger. has to hang from something, whether on the frame or a c-clamp on the derailleur.

Sounds like the b-screw needs adjusted, or your chain is too short. did you increase the number of gears on the cog or chainrings, or get a medium length derailleur cage?

Don't worry about it, that's a general rule ignored by many on here. But do post a picture, I feel that might make up for any lack of humour in your posts ;0)

The MX 10 11-36 cassette shows a weight of 341 grams, the CSMX 8 11-42 cassette is 385 grams.
Having a scoot on eBay I found a Sram PG1050 far cheaper than the Sunrace! It's a little lighter and a known quality so I bought that.

I was referring to a derailleur hanger that you can replace-the kind you would keep in your bike tool kit. The Tourney/Sunrace derailleur bolts onto the bike wheel nut.

The upper jockey wheel is jammed up against the large sprocket because the hanger is too short. My LBS told me the derailleur I wanted is no longer available. I almost took it back, but with some adjustment it seemed to work. I do not see how adjusting the stops or having a longer cage would address that problem. If you are referring to the chain jumping off-I solved that problem with the new derailleur-no one seems to believe that, including the mechanic at my LBS. When the rear derailleur is wobbling three quarters of an inch because of excessive play-it will not work real well.
