I was about to place an order for some Super Motos, but see that they are kind of a lightweight tire with no protection. Would the Big Apple be a better choice for a fully loaded touring 29er on bad roads?

The question is how much protection will you need? A Super Moto may be lightweight and lacking in protection by Schwalbe touring tire standards but it's not a lightweight tire. What do you anticipate that a Super Moto can't handle that Big Apple will? Every moment you will notice the slower rolling of the extra tire armor, is it worth it?

The choices are limited in those sizes. If you must have a high degree of flat protection you might look at an Almotion instead. Lots of tire in the Marathon line with varying degrees of armor and slowness built in. The Super Moto is not fragile or flat prone.

Hey thanks for the info, that helps. I really don't know, honestly. I've never done any bike touring. Not a fan of heavy wire bead tires, so maybe I'll just go for the Super Motos. They are almost a pound lighter. I won't be carrying a huge load anyway, only doing a few days at the most.

For touring on bad roads a protected tire is a much better choice. Big Apples roll really well. With the weight you're carrying the weight difference of tires won't make much of a difference.

Super Motos are more supple if you go into rocks and roots at low pressures, like regular MTB riding. Light weight will be felt there more.

Thanks for the reply, (here and in the other thread) I appreciate it. Think I'm going to keep looking and maybe consider a smaller tire, as well.
yea i used supermoto 2.35s for a long time but after trying out lighter tires i could never go back. The other thing is they are expensive and don't wear well. You could probably find something in a 2.0 . I put some conti race king race sports on and they actually roll pretty good on pavement and last well.
