My wife's sister wants to do some light adventure touring with us. Very lightly loaded. I would like to find a production bike with a steel frame for that if possible. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks. She weighs about 135.

At that price, I think you would only find something 'pre-owned'. I don't even think you'll find a blowout sale price on a new bike that meets that criteria.

okay, so maybe it is too much to ask. I read the Bicycle Times review that the Specialized AWOL comp is 24 pounds and lists at $1900. That did not sound too bad. Maybe I can get her to spend a little more, or find a 2014 model, or as a last resort, an aluminum bike!. Thanks, I will keep the search on.

What type of bike are you looking? A road style touring bike might be doable with an Aluminum frame.

A hardtail 29er with suspension fork will be nearly impossible to find <24lbs for less than $1500.

Unsprung weight doesn't matter too much. Not too much difference between a few extra pounds on your bike (not wheels) and your own body.

A good set of light wheels will make all the difference.

Looking for hardtail and no suspension fork. Plan on using a tire that will do decent on the road, like a 2 inch wide Schwalbe Marathon. A few extra pounds is significant, and I totally agree that a light set of wheels makes the most difference. Looking at that price range, a 2 X 10 drive train, and lighter wheels would put me in the ball park for the weight on the Novara Manzama and the Specialized AWOL (base model). I think what you posters are telling me is that a new model off the floor of a LBS or REI will not meet my criteria. Maybe a Mazama on sale and an upgrade on wheels could be had, but probably not if I had to sink $500 or more on wheels. Any suggestions for wheels would be greatly appreciated. My wife has Stan's ZTR Crest wheels, that seem reasonably light.

I built my 650b chiner carbon for about 1600 and it comes right in at 24 flat. Factor in larger hoops and steel frame, and you're not even close. A rigid fork will save a bit, but probably not 2 to 3 pounds worth.

I am aware. Hence my stating that with steel he wont even be close.
I think the AWOL comp is "close" at 24.2 pounds, with the same frame as the AWOL base model, a lighter set of wheels, and 2 X crankset, I would think you could get the base model there. I just had a friend pick up a 2014 AWOL for a grand. A medium Mazama is listed at 25.6 pounds. I figured with a 2 x 10 and a lighter set of wheels, you could make it. With the 20% REI discount, a Mazama would be about $880. That would leave $620 for upgrades. I would be interested in suggestions on a lighter wheel set, or drivetrain mods that would get me there. Thanks in advance to all for sharing your knowledge.

What are the chances of running a 1x drivetrain, not enough range? You could shave a half pound that way. Also, be careful those weights aren't quoted at the smallest possible frame and without pedals. The weight you see in real life may not match up.

Yep, not enough range. And come to find out the Alex rims are 470 g, so not a lot to be gained there. I am going to start looking for a nice light double crank. Thanks

Well, my sister-in-law and two friends all ordered the Manzama on the REI sale. I hope they like them, or I will feel a little responsible. We will see.
