I have been looking at finding an inexpensive HID light system. Cygolite markets an HID with a Nicad battery and an overnite charger to contain cost. The MSRP on the unit is $300 however it is usually discounted. Today Performance has the price at $229 but with the 20% off coupon the price is $185. If you are willing to sacrafice a little weight and charge time you have the same light on the trail for at least $100 less the L&M and NR. At this time its out of stock but they are still taking orders on it.

I was seriously looking at that deal but ultimately was put off by the Nicad battery. I ended up with a Trail Tech HID via Batteryspace - about the same money ($195) but with a NiMH battery.

The only downside is that it is difficult to mount on a regular bike helmet. The quality of the setup seems to be very good, although some people have had issues with the battery (I haven't so far).

Anyone have good pictures or ideas of how to mount these? For 1/2 the price of the big brands, I'd sure like to try it.
This thread had a few more posts on that that seem to have disappeared????

Anyhow, what I did was take some of the dense black foam that the light came in and carved it into a block that would wedge neatly into a vent on my helmet (I had to do this because the light needed to mount directly over one of the vents).

I skewered the foam block and ran a zip tie through it to secure it to the helmet. The Trail Tech somes with a heavy duty velcro sticky patch which I stuck on the block. The light itself sticks to the velcro patch.

If you don't have vents down the centre of your helmet, you may be able to stick the velcro directly on the helmet (.e.g if you had a full-face).

I used velcro strips to attach a flat piece of plastic with the velcro strip on it. I need to improve on it a bit as it is a bit tough to attach in place since the plastic is too big and stiff. I have a dirt jump/bmx style helmet that the Velcro just just fastens right on top of. I would personally avoid NiCad like the plague as they have some serious issues. I have a couple of different NiMH batteries that I use with mine that work really really well. The only thing I've ever really had to complain about my Trailtech setup is that the cable is way, way too long but I plan to remedy that here shortly and would have sooner if I weren't so lazy.

I have a stretchy velco strap from somewhere that I looped through a couple vents, the trailtech sticks to the velcro, it sits in a position that is aimed a little high so I just stick a twig or something under the back to get the aim good.
