Just got a new fatbike and thought it might be fun to go ride some beaches. Looking for longer mileage beaches away from the masses. Would be nice to find something at least 10 miles long for an out and back.

Any suggestions of where to start?

How about Point Reyes "10 Mile Beach" from the light house to Kehoe Beach and beyond.
I was thinking that, too. You can't ride in the park since it's federal land, but that only starts above the high tide mark. And while you're in the neighborhood you could get a few fun miles around Bolinas, one of the coolest little towns in CA.

New Brighton to Pajaro river is approximately ten miles one way. That should be a start.

If you can cross the river you have another approx 10 miles to the Salinas river. Then, last but not least, Salinas river to the Monterey Beach Hotel another 10 miles.

Yeah, thanks for the high tide mark info. My feeling is there might be a short grace period for biking on the beach at Point Reyes. Meaning the ranger might be so surprised to see a bike on the beach that he/she would cut some slack...or not.

There are some "legal" trails in Point Reyes National Seashore - Olema Valley Trail and Bear Valley trail among others.

Been there, done that.

Pajaro River crossing might be interesting.

This was a ride from Moss Landing north with my son to meet up with "Jack Burns" who was riding down from Santa Cruz with his posse.

Most times of the year the Pajaro is no big deal; of course tidal conditions are an issue as is flow from big storms. YMMV.

The Monterey Bay coast is mostly rideable all the way from Monterey to SC. The Moss Landing estuary needs to be portaged around unless you like to try floating your fatbike across.

When I have a hankering for some beach riding I usually ride from the Salinas River (usually totally closed/dry with a sand bar) to Moss Landing and back. Usual access is from the Salinas River State Beach lot off Molero Road.

i've ridden most of the beach from sea cliff to salinas river on a 40c tire. on a negative tide moss landing to new brighton is packed as fuct. fun a full moon. pajaro river's do able, shoes on or off (if you really needed you could cut upriver). a lot of the beach south of moss landing's a bit steeper sometimes, probably real do able on a fat bike. hunter and some other folks turned me onto that.

Well, excuuuse meee!

Sorry, honest mistake because of the national park affiliation. I didn't realize it had such a plethora of quality trails...

Edit: Hey! Aren't you the guy that keeps getting banned and then comes back with another name?! What an honor, Mr. Taint.

Wow,
Thanks for all the great responses! I'll definitely be looking at Brighton heading south next weekend. The following week I head to the UK for a month without my bikes 😭

Curious to know how badly my bike will beaten up by riding in the sand. Admittedly I wanted a Fatbike because I demo'd one at Sea Otter last year and couldn't stop thinking about how fun it was.

I never really thought I would ride it purposely as a fat bike, but now I'd like to try it in the sand. Normally I would care about wear and tear but would assume Sand is going to infiltrate every crevice of the bike.

I'd be a lot more concerned about the salt but the sand will rip up your drive chain for sure. I'd go on a spring tide when it is really low. The swell is low and the wind off shore. Ride the tideline and try to avoid standing salt water and the super soft sand.

Of course give your bike a proper tear down and bath afterward.

I'd like to see someone ride from wharf #2 all the way to New Brighton just to see it done. I used to ride my cruiser down the shoreline from the bars downtown to my apartment on Del Monte beach to avoid the cops on the bike trail. Always had a curiosity when it came to what 50 miles on a fat bike in the sand would be like in one day.

I know there are some really remote areas of beach between the two places that camping would be possible.

I'd want to use the buddy system and bring a surfboard. Buddy would be there so he can all the emt when "******" throws out his business card.

Also. FWIW. I know a guy that bought a fat bike to fish the secret striped bass spots here. He took one trip, decided he'd walk from now on and take his bike duck hunting instead. Quote "riding bikes in hard enough much less in the sand."
