Ideallly a XC tire that is durable, lightweight (600g 'ish) and climbs well. I'll run tubeless - It's for my Stan's Arch wheelset.

I live in SoCal the trails i ride are a mix of dry hard packed and sharp rocks.

I'm leaning towards Maxxis Ardent Race... Thoughts?

Your going to be limited in this selection. Usually durability and lightweight is hard to find.

The Maxxis Ardent race would be go, but would recommend the EXO casing over the regualr casing for durability. Downside is the weight is around 700 grams.

Maxxis IKON. Again in the EXO casing. The 2.2 width is around 600 grams, the 2.35 around 700 grams.

Conti X-King Protection. Black Chili compound is one of the best out there for grip. Weight is around 620 grams. But they have issues with sidewalls deforming. I believe this is due to the 3 ply sidewall. It's stiff and doesn't give as much. Must run lower psi than other tires.

Schwalbe Nobby Nic. Excellent traction. Get the Evolution Pacestar compound with SnakeSkin sidewalls. Very expensive. Around $90 a tire. The 2.25 width is around 650 grams.

Michelin Wild Grip'R. Tubeless ready. Weight around 700 grams. I ran the first edition of this tire on the back of my 29er a few years ago in some muddy/wet conditions. Great traction.

Hope this helps.

Thanks this helps! With the X king what do you mean by 3 ply sidewall?

Also, forgot to mention I do A LOT of climbing...

I've been running Specialized Renegade rear and Fasttrak front and love them. Trying an Ikon 2.2 rear and Ardent 2.25 front now.
If they work as expected then the same in 2.35" rear and 2.4" front will be trialed.

The Ikon rear and fat Ardent front don't have many negatives apart from weight...

Looking for 27.5 rear tire as well - same as OP - Socal, tubeless, climb well AND most important: great grip on hardpack /loose over dry pack

I had the Ardent race 2.2 and find its traction very iffy at turns, the bike just slipped under me a few times
I installed Racing Ralphs 2.2 Snake Skin which has better grip than the Ardent, but I had a slip last night on a solo night ride - again at fast turn downhill with lose over hardpack...hurt my elbow pretty pad.

I am now looking at getting the 2015 Nobby Nic 2.25 for the rear - hopefully it will provide a better grip
Any other recommendations ?

I run Tubeless, at 22-23 lbs, weigh 180 lbs, bike Pivot Mach 5.7 converted to 27.5

BTW, My front tire is 2.35 Nobby Nic which is great. - no problem at the front...

I've rode the x kings quiet a few times now and I think there have a pretty good grip. They are not the lightest but they climb really well and unlike my other tires these keep me up on hard turns.

BTW I think they are still on sale at performance.

Got a pair on my 26" rigid single speed and they do seem to climb very well.
