best budget singlespeed mtb?

I want to get a singlespeed mtb very bad. it would be my second mountain bike, I was wondering what would be a good budget singlespeed? weights not that much of an issue and front suspension is a must and I don't care if its 26 or a 29er.

Or find a decent older model mountain bike on craigslist or ebay and do a conversion. That's how I got started on a singlespeed by converting an older bike I got off craigslist. Good Luck!

Yeah, you can find a Fleabay deal and get a 26" for really cheap. Think Pricepoint has a kit with spacers, cogs, and tensioner for a good price--you're all set. Get a SS chainring too that isn't ramped.

I'll second the Gravity G29 from Bikes Direct. I'm really happy with mine. I have the rigid one though. The fork on the front suspension version is entry level, but can be upgraded later. I ride it as much as my Stumpjumper.

To be honest, rigid isn't as bad as it seems or appears. There are a lot of keys that make it a viable option. A large tire that you can run at low pressure and good grips are key. I bought my first rigid last summer and I'm loving it so far. If you're trails aren't too rooty, I think it's a viable option.

I've been riding rigid 26er and 29er for 15+ years. Rigid beats budget suspension every time. Just my .02

I'm pretty happy with my G-29. I also have a 26" Giant MTB that I converted and now use it a a SS commuter. I got it for $70, made some PVC spacers for the rear cog and put a tensioner on it so I has it all done for about $110. With the road gearing I was able to eliminate the tensioner.

Several variables at play of course, but I find that my Kona Unit is a much smoother ride than my Giant Talon with the "entry level" Suntour front sus.

So I initially look at red bike above and snap judgement, old school silly. Then I read slohr post, awesome! That IS an awesome setup for $100. That red bike makes me smile. Brings back a lot of memories of older bikes I had. Have fun! To think I was about to post: sure, spend $1000 and get a good bike. Camekanix would get 10 bikes for that much scratch. Classic.

On One inbred , 29. Track dropouts , cause yer commited. I love mine. But soon it got up to an 1800$ build. Oooo Lordy , worth the dough
