I posted some shots of this bike over on 29r last night but, got some better daytime ones today so I thought I'd put them here. I just finished a short fixed road ride a few minutes ago. I'll have to try it out on the trails soon. I built this planning to sell it but, it may end up being one of my keepers and bumping another bike onto my sell list.

Good advice.

Pleez be careful with platforms on ye fixie! Even on the road, they can create some injuries, almost broke my leg a few month ago when my Eggy cleat came unclipped.
Yes I can see the potential for that to happen. I just put them because as I finished the bike late Sunday night they were laying around not on a bike like all my eggies. Yesterday I did the wheel flip to fixed and did a very short road ride with them succesfsully but I'll be putting some eggbeaters or candys on soon.

Sweet looking Cross Fix

Very nicely done. I am a big fan of riding fixed on dirt. And that bike of yours rocks.

If you stick with it, you'll discover that it works great :: fixed on trail that is. Obviously, there are a bunch of new challenges to tackle and I think that just adds to the fun. Steep technical downhill and really fast bumpy sections are the biggest challenges.

Rock on.

Dang

Them thar IROs sure is purty :D

Soooo uh......How does it ride? I'm assuming that since it's gone from the sell list to the keep and ride list, that tells me something, but I'm curious because I've been eyeing those for a while.

How's the fit? What size did you get and how tall are you, etc.?

I'm assuming that the steel frame and fork gives it a smooth ride, but are there any other comments you can make to the potential buyers out there? Did you use the stock IRO components (beside the bar of course) and if so, how are they?

Thanks!

I'll commute a few miles on it today, fixed with eggbeaters on it now. I'll be able to give a better ride report on it after that. I'm 6'2" and about 255# so most bikes flex under me more than they would under smaller folk. Still I can tell a big difference between the ride of a steel bike and an aluminum one. This is a 60cm frame, same size as my Cannondale roadie though this is 3cm shorter in the top tube. Wheels and drive components are also from IRO and quality seems quite nice. I had to add a couple spacer for a good fit of the rear wheel. The rear wheel is high flange and the front low flange, it may have been a packing error? I did not call to whine. The brakes I used are tektro Mini-V brakes which I get cheap through a supplier. They work much better than expected. I'll post a ride report tonight or tomorrow.

Great riding bike...scarey ride.

OK, I rode in to work today and the bike rides great. I was reminded twice though, that I am not a seasoned fixie rider. I stood to accelerate away from a light and just as I sat on the saddle I attempted to coast for a second to adjust my sitting position, like I probably always do. The pedal came around and just about stood me back up.

A mile later as I neared work I tried to bunny hop over a cement drain channel full of water in a parking lot. Not quite sure what happened, just that I barely stayed on the bike. In my attempt not to get a little gutter water on the new bike, I nearly peed on it.

As much as I enjoy SS, I'm not sure if fixed or SS is what I want for a daily commuter. I bought a geared cross bike on Ebay that I should get next week, it may make a better commuter. If so, I may have to list this Robroy in the classifieds. My initial plan was to build it to sell anyway. Keeping it goes against my goal of selling off half of my bikes.

Nice Mattman!

Nice bike, looks like a keeper to me. The look of the dirt drops and the high rise stem use to really be ugly to me....that is...until I tried them set up like that.
C-O-M-F-O-R-T-A-B-L-E! Now it's a beautiful site everytime I see a bike set up like that.

I have a new cross check that I will be unveiling very shortly on this forum after it's maiden voyage on Saturday. Stay tuned......

Enjoy your new bike and have a great weekend.

Thanks

Thanks for the honest feedback! That's the one thing that's kept me from pulling the trigger. I love SS for off-road, but with gas prices being what they are, I want something I can commute on. 9 Miles on an SS Road bike (or CX bike) seems like it might get old.

Can anyone else comment on longer road rides on an SS road or CX bike?

That's odd about crank Bros

got a midge bar set-up on my fixxie, just need to get a higher rise stem. Watch out for anything crank bros on a fixxie or single speed, I've ripped 3 bodies right off the spindle. Makes for a crappy ride back.
I have 4 sets of eggbeaters and have not had any problem yet with any. That may be because no one pair gets full time high mileage use. I know lots of people who use them and like them but, first Padre and now you, say you have had problems. Padre is a big guy who rides a lot and rides hard so, naturally he breaks things more. Are you like that too? I seem to be lucky I hardly break anything, I'm big but, I don't ride that hard or that much. Maybe, it's just that I'm such a smooth, flowing rider ;)

There is a world of difference between the same commute, done SS as opposed to fixed. I had a 12 mi commute (each way) for a long time in LA that I hated SS, but was a blast fixed on the same bike. Give it a try each way, and you will be amazed.

As for longer fixed rides, make sure your saddle is adjusted just right, and appologize to your taint before you start the ride (or use you favorite lube), cause your but will be stuck there for most of the ride.

Not quite like Padre

I'm 5'9" 160lbs. I was lucky for a little while too...

If you take the cap off the end and look at the bearing and bolt you'll see how teenie-tiny it is, and those 1/8" of threads are all that's holding in on. Crank Bro's does have a good no hassle return policy, but I would rather not have it happen, it would be very easy for that spindle to go right through your calf... anyway I just got my third pair back and it looks like the bolt head is much bigger, so hopefully that will fix it. I would rather see a version that weighs a few more grams and has the bolt go through the axle.

Saying that I am still running mine on both my SS and fixedgear, partly because I'd be out a good bit of money replacing them and they do work great when they're not ripping apart :)
