Giving the Ikon a try and will run tubeless. I have heard some conflicting information--do I need the tubeless ready version or can I just run the EXO to save some weight. Any experiences would be appreciated.

The 'TR' stands for tubeless ready, which means that the tire has UST spec beads and that the compounds used are guaranteed to be compatible with sealants.

The TR variant works well on UST and Stan's rims. The non-TR version works well on Stan's rims, but is not ideal for UST rims. And you potentially run the risk of voiding the warranty if you run the non-TR version tubeless with sealant.
 
my TR were a pain to mount on my crest rims. They were very hard to install and even harder to pop with an air compressor. The bead would not sit properly and would remain stucked in the center groove of the rim. It took a few try to set them up properly. They are heavier then exo ikons too.
 
I have both. The 26x2.35 EXO is about 650 grams, the TR version of the EXO is 40 grams heavier and the sidewalls seem just a little more substantial, but it's close. Both have worked well, tubeless and I've had no problems with either. The TR's do hold air a little better than the non-TR's. On Easton Haven carbon rims, the TR's seat easily with a hand pump. On my DT Swiss rims, the EXO's worked just fine and seated easily, as well. I put the 26x2.2 EXO TR's on my wife's bike, with Stan's Crest rims and they also were a breeze to install, with no leaks. Use a little soapy water to help them seat, regardless of rim and they go right on. I had no trouble getting them off, either.
