Not sure I am in the right frame of mind or not, but I'm doing it this year on the mtb, after spectating/volunteering the last few. Hope to see you there! I'd also be interested in meeting a local to show me the trails on Rockton...or at least point me in the right direction.

Just want to add to this thread (hoping people might see this)...been doing some trail work and trying to open these trails back up for better biking. I am now in Pgh and do some work when I stop back to the area to visit my parents.

I am putting together a plan that hopefully allows some major clearing by spring time (2015). If anyone is interested in pitching in maybe we could meet on a weekend (Kelly Cellar Loop is going to need some major clearing). Email me if interested...please add Rockton Trails to the subject line.

I will post updates to this thread once I do a little more work to put together a few routes of cleared trails.

A riding buddy of mine has a family hunting cabin up near Moshannon State Forest, and we're wondering if it'll make a good base camp for a long riding weekend in the spring. We've done Dirt Fest a couple of times. It looks like it'll be about a 1.5 hour drive from the cabin to Rothrock, a little more to Raystown. Are there any other good trails in the area that would make this a worthwhile trip? We're coming from SEPA, and don't want to add too much time in the car driving to trails from the cabin, when we could find another place to stay closer to trails.
I've found some info on trails at Rockton, that look to be the closest. Also saw a thread on the Fat Tire Challenge trails that look fairly close. Anything else I'm missing? Are these trails worth it if we hit Rothrock on the way to the cabin?
Thanks!

Rockton trails are old school, but really cool and not a huge area. I always hit them up for a loop when I get out that way. Clear Creek and Cook forest also, but you have to explore and there is lots there to ride.

Depending on the exact location of the cabin, you may be able to ride without driving at all. When the trip gets closer please feel free to PM me and I'll try and give you some guidance on balancing the trail quality, what you like, and travel distance.

Generally the Rockton Trails are the only place for an out of towner to be able to go and enjoy as they are pretty well marked, but depending on timing I would gladly try and give some guests a tour or local guidance.

like the Facebook page above for updates and status. spring riding will depend a lot on snow fall (I was x skiing in April and not mtn biking). most of the trails are open and rideable with the exception of Coupler Run loop which should be open come next spring.

this would be a nice place to ride after Rothrock as most of the trails in Rockton do not have the elevation like Rothrock.

check out FAT TIRE CHALLENGE for the fat tire course (map, status, pre-rides, etc). it is also a fun race if you like central PA terrain.

there is also a race at black moshannon SP that you can google for course map, etc.

any other questions let me know. (you can also post them on the FB page)
