Well, I don't know much about it -- this is the only time I have ever replaced cabling. But I ordered the Jagwire Mountain Pro, and am really happy with it.

It got so that the rear wouldn't shift reliably. I would clean and lube the cable and it would be great for a ride or two, then act up again. The housings were rusty. Someone here said to replace the cable.

The kit comes with small tubing to cover the cable runs that are not inside housing, with ferrules with "noses" that fit inside the small tubing. There appears to be a pretty thick coating inside the housing -- the center wires are smaller than normal -- and the center wires are covered with Teflon or something. It shifts REALLY smooth and easy.

Stretch is minimal. I adjusted the barrel connector only 1/4 turn on my first ride.

FYI, I replaced the SLX shifters with XT while I was at it, so I haven't done a fair side-by-side comparison.

^ Ya, I like the Jagwires Ripcord-Mtn Pro cables.

there are those that say the straws aren't any good as it rubs on the cable but they didn't install proper as I never had that issue.

I use a hair dry and straighten the straw.. then cut about a 1/4 inch short of each cable stop so they can move a bit but not expose the bare cable. Months later the cable is clean and shifting fine.

hard to find Shimano XTR SIS Shifter Cable Set

Why is it so hard to find Shimano XTR SIS Shifter Cable Set? Is this item discontinued & become retro? Looks like i'll have to buy overseas for $40 including shipping which is pretty good, no? An Amazon seller has it for $88 sheesh!

Shimano XTR SIS Shift Gear Cable Set in Black | eBay image does not say XTR, what do you think?

Shimano XTR ATB Gear Cable Set | eBay image says XTR but also says ATB. Should be the same & okay for our MTB right?

When I built my Fargo up last year I went the Gore route - shifter and brake cables, as I'm running Bengal MB700Ts on it. I think I've had to make two adjustments to the rear dérailleur cable for slack in that time; the last being early in this year's riding season. Other than that they've been 100% solid.

Plan on doing same with the Pugsley I'm building and when my wife's Fargo is in need of new cables it'll probably be getting Ride-Ons.

not unless you find old stock lying around,... Gore Discontinued back in Dec 2012

Wonder if anyone will come up with hydraulic shifting? That would be sweet.
Already exist. Pneumatic shifting also was introduced in the late 90's. Using compressed air.

Yes, but they are selling directly to SRAM. SRAMS professional cables are Gore cables.

The best cable now is Shimano 2014 Dura Ace BC-9000, works great for MTB. Shifting is 30% better than any other cable, its that good!! Not cheep but well worth it, also will not come apart inside housing. Super slick polymer coating, trust me it is the best!!

BC-9000 are brake cables and housings.

I think the stuff in the middle like Jagwires work great. I have gone back and forth on lubing...for customer's bikes that were shifting poorly, I always did it to help out. On mine, I leave it dry b/c I take care of my bike and keep things clean - lube and cause the housings to get gunked up. I had Gore Ride-On's one time..total waste for me.

I think the Jagwire stuff is junk for MTB, The Gore I have heard good and bad about them, but never tried.
What specifically leads you to this conclusion? I put 500 or so a year on my MTB and have been running Jagwire shifter cable/housing with super-smooth shifting. Note that I don't ride in rain, mud, etc. For $20 a year I just replace it.
