Anyone recommend a good GIANT mountain bike which I'll probably use more on the city streets than on the trails? I want to spend no more than about $500 Canadian which works out to about $400 American.

I'm 5'2" and about 145 pounds. I haven't ridden in a long time but I want to start again. I've tried Hybrids and Comfort bikes but don't really care for them.

Thanks.

My LBS just emailed me and told me that they're getting the following bikes....which one should I be seriously thinking about...

15" Giant Cypress-R models
15" Cypress SX 15"
14" Giant Sedona LX.

I kinda like the looks and description of the Sedona LX but I don't know what the price is. It looks expensive though as it said it was the top of the line in that category.

Sad to say, but those are comfort type bikes your LBS is pointing you towards not "true" mountain bikes. As Dan said look at the Rincon and Yukon, the Yukon MSRP is $470 US and Rincon MSRP $330. You'll get better components on the Yukon which should last you longer, but if cash's the issue right now the Rincon will serve you fine and you can upgrade components later when they wear out.

See if you can find an 04 Iquana. Shoud be able to get even an 05 for about $500.
The Sedena LX is $470.00 and is spec the same as the DX but the Hayes Mechanical
disc's and E-Z fire shifters.
A 05 Iguana is $600.00 msrp not $500.00. You would never be able to sell a Yukon because it is $470.00. The cypress SX is $700.00 retail alittle out of fretman's price range.
Plus those are all comfort bikes you said you did not want.

I should've said in my original post "Hybrid and Cruiser" bikes and not "Hybrid and Comfort" bikes.

Is there a big difference between Comfort and Mountain bikes. I thought a Comfort might also fit the bill since I plan on doing 90% street riding.

I'll edit my original post to reflect this.

If your not going to mountain bike then I guess you don't need a "mountain bike".

I have no experience on comfort or cruisers or crusforts but if it's rode riding mainly then i'm sure they are fine. Once again, good components are what matter, and find a bike you feel good on.

If you are doing 90% street riding get the a Cypress bike, they have 700c wheels so you are alittle more efficient. The Sedona and Cypress lines are the same except the wheels and forks. The Sedona's have a 26 inch wheel. They are mountain frames though. The components are generally Acera,Altus or Alivio derailleurs and Gripshift MRX with suspension seatposts and adjustable rise stem.

Here are the prices I was quoted...in Canadian dollars mind you....The Cypress is quite pricey unless the lower end model is good too.

Cypress-R is $379
Cypress SX $979
Sedona LX $679

Those bikes are $200.00 MORE than what well sell them at. We don't have a Cypress-R model so I can't even tell you what that is. But for your best value get the Cypress DX. I would call my closest Giant Dealer in the US and see if they can ship one to you.

I think factoring in the exchange rate at about 20% and then adding shipping and handling and taxes the price comes out to about even. I'll look into the Cypress DX and see what that's all about.
