I'm looking to buy a new bike for mostly cross country/mountain biking, with the ocassional city ride.

I've narrowed it down to 2 bikes: Jamis Dakar XLT and the Iron Horse Warrior Elite. Any suggestions?
Your best bet is to check out the reviews on this website. Then visit the Jamis and Iron Horse forums to see what peeps are talking about - you may find a review there too.

I own both brands' bikes (not the models) and both have treated me right.

Also, are you looking to do cross country riding or more aggressive stuff? The bikes you are looking at are for more agressive stuff and will have the weight penalty for that.

You should really get a ride on both even if it is in a parking lot.

Both should be nice rides.

Thanks for the quick response, I've been reading as many reviews/posts as I can find. This bike will be my first full suspension bike, but I've been riding for years. I'll mostly be doing some cross country riding, but I plan on taking it to a ski resort in august for some downhill fun.

A good all-around full suspension bike that can take some abuse and still pedal uphill and around town is what I'm looking for.

I actually rode the Warrior tonight, along with 3 other bikes. They didn't have the XLT in stock, but I'm thinking it will be similar. I'd rather not put in a special order for the XLT and wish I'd gone with the Warrior when it arrives.

Wait, wish "I'd gone," as in you've already ordered it? Little lost here.

That aside, my vote is is for the Iron Horse, I've had a lot of bad luck with Jamis, A LOT. Maybe my problems were with a bad LBS but I can't recomend them at all with the safety issues I had.

Let us know what you decide.

You'll be happy with the Iron Horse. The folks on the Iron Horse board are very helpful. A couple of the regular posters work for IH and the guy that designed the suspension for their bikes posts there all the time as well.

I don't "know" anything, only from what I read on the forums and the occasional stay in a Holiday Inn. But what seems to really set Iron Horse apart is their license of the DW link for some of their frames, not all. I don't think the Warrior uses the DW link rear suspension. In this model year I think the MK Hollowpoint series and the new Azure series along with some downhill frames license the DW link. Last year the Hollowpoint series did use it.

The general consensus is that the DW link is amazing and the value for $ from Iron Horse combined with this rear suspension and customer service is what seems to be creating the cult phenomena.

So I'd definitely check on the Iron Horse board regarding the Warrior's suspension link and whether it is in fact a DW designed link and if not, how it compares.

I think Jamis maks some really great bike. No experience with the Iron Horse, but have had lots of great experiences with Jamis. I am particularly fond of their geometry. Just feels great to me. I really lov e the '03 Komodo, which is in many respects very similar to the Dakar XLT, only the Komodo is a hardtail. Dunno if that makes too much sense the way I put it. I guess what I'm saying is that you should get the Jamis. I think you'll love it.

Own a Jamis

Never owned an Iron Horse, but have heard great things about them. I own an '05 Dakar Pro and have a great relationship with the local Jamis rep from Jamis and my LBS is a auth Jamis dealer. The bike is well made, price was great for all XTR and the latest in Fox tech. Jamis has answered issues with past XLT chainstays with an updated beefier design. Jamis has been great with customer service. That's my $.02
