Factory isn't lube, it's grease, and yeah, it will hold a lot of dirt. I use rock n roll lube. It works for me, but I don't ride in the salt water, so my opinion is hardly relative...just saying.
Do you ride in the sand or very sandy trails? The soil on the trails I ride are sandy. I tried Rock and Roll Extreme and it seemed to collect a lot of sand deep in the chain. I've been using ProGold Prolink. Even though it's not a "dry" lube like a teflon one, the sand does not hang on nearly as much. It's much thinner than Rock and Roll which I think is some sort of wax emulsion.

If you're only doing dry riding, try a hot paraffin wax dip. Nothing will stick to the chain.

It's old school as hell but will last several hundred miles between applications as long as the chain doesnt get wet. Only downside is that water will break down the wax and you'll have to reapply.

We all use Squirt Lube for beachriding here SquirtLube.com: Welcome

You need to totally degrease your chain to remove all other lubes before using Squirt.
Using the Sram 991 or XTR chains you do not get any rust build up on side inks,

No need to de - grease the chain after every beach ride either, just hose it with water, then whipe dry, once properly dry add more lube, :)

I don't believe there's a lube that would protect against salt water and not cause sand to stick.

If I were to ride my fat bike on the beach and in the water, I'd opt for an IGH and put a casing around the chain.
Probably nothing perfect, but when you consider how much time coastkid spends in salt water and sand, his recommendation is worth listening to.

I'll repeat what CK says above: most of us here are using Squirt and it's perfect for heavy marine environment abuse

Of course, you need to be aware it doesn't provide any corrosion protection like a wet lube would, so choose a nickel-coated chain.

I've been on the same SRAM 991 for over a year now, still cleans up nicely on the very seldom occasion I use the chain cleaner, and still nowhere near needing replacement for wear.

It just works... ;)

what lube are you guys using for beach rides?

7 weeks camped right on the beach in Baja....threw some oil [Big Bri Oil] on about mid-trip. I don't really worry too much about it. I run $16 SRAM 8 spd chains and with an IGH they just keep going pretty much no matter what. I replace them every year or so with a fresh one.

This chain is now over a year old. I'll probably swap a new one in this Spring.

My riding is mainly beach and dunes. I use Mucoff dry lube as the normal stuff tends to pick up sand that bit quicker and then you get the dreaded chain suck. I usually use a chain scrubber with some bike cleaner in to clean the chain. Not after every ride but I always clean it after the second one. Keep an eye on the jocky wheels too they soon get worn down.
