Rock creek trail - Trail, Laramie, Wyoming

Rock creek trail - Trail, Laramie, Wyoming

DESCRIPTION

From trail head pretty smoot for about 1.5 miles then it turns uphill. It goes uphill for about 16 miles until it hits sand lake. Awesome rocky ride most of the way. After you hit sand lake turn around and come back down. The trail is not very technical but very scenic and fun.

Just went today (June 24 2014). Find another trail. It is littered with fallen trees and about two miles in four large trees are blocking the trail with no good way around. Hopefully soon the trail will be cleaned up

This was a nice trail that has deteriorated to the point where it has become dangerous in spots.

I would recommend 2 spare tire tubes and a patch kit for this ride. I've never gotten through it without at least one flat tire. One time I took a friend on a hardtail, he had at least 6 flats. Lots of sharp angular rocks! Technically the trail is fairly easy, however there are a few spots with really bad exposure. Just look where you want to go! The positive is that this is a fantastic canyon you're riding through. Quintessential Wyoming, roaring stream, lots of aspens, and old mining ruins.

Out and back from the bottom, or shuttle from Sand Lake Rd down. The longest ride I have done (and my favorite it's kindoff the Snowy Range junior version of the Monarch Crest trail) is from Lake Marie through The Gap (extensive hike a bike section), over miles of rolling tundra to Sheep Lake, take a left and it's 3000 foot or so downhill from there to the trail head.

Great downhill run in rock creek canyon, with steep exposure, technical talus fields, and great scenery. Trail was well maintained when I rode.

Customer Service

Park at the bottom, ride FR 111 to FR 101 up to trailhead at Sand Lake, and then descend.

This is a great late summer ride or well after the snow melt. I rode it over the July 4th weekend (05) and it was still very wet in many sections on the upper part. As other riders have commented, it's better as a shuttle due to the numerous talus fields and fallen trees which intersect the trail forcing you to dismount and briefly carry your bike. The trail snakes along the Rock Creek and becomes dangerously narrow at high elevations forcing you to keep a careful eye on your line. If this trail was maintained regularly, it would be a bigger attraction for sure, but the flipside isn't always better. Definitely worth checking out if you've ridden everything on the front range and crave more.

Customer Service

Shuttle from the bottom and start at the Deep Creek campground.

The trail is best if shuttled. It's a great ride, 12 miles almost entirely down hill!

Customer Service

Shuttle up from Arlington and ride down the trail. Plan on being out for a couple hours

I don't give 5 stars easily but, despite this trails drawbacks, it rates so high on the adventure, remote and uncrowded, and scenic scales, that the rating is well warranted. I love to climb, but I concur that riding up this trail is foolish. Take the roads to the top. While this doesn't much sound like a recommendation for the singletrack purist, you're likely to see more elk than cars on these roads. And then, the singletrack down is more than worth slogging up 12 miles of dirt road. Most of the trail are just plain fun. All of it is beautiful. The scree fields can be a drag, but there are only a few and they don't distract too much from the rest of the ride. Once you enter the canyon, you'll be all alone, even on a holiday weekend with nice weather. Much of the trail is bordered by a precipitious drop down an exceedingly steep and rocky slope to a creek hundreds of feet below. Ride with a partner as a fall here could be your last, especially since the trail could go days without another human being coming along to discover your carcass. If you want to ride away from it all and still have great singletrack in beautiful surroundings, you can't beat this trail.

Get the maps and take the forest service roads up brom the lower trailhead. Once you get to the upper trailhead, turn downhill and rip!

This is a pretty challenging trail. The previous poster stated that it was not too technical -- well, that would be true if there wasn't HUGE exposure on the river side -- a narrow trail and in some cases several hundred feet down to the raging rock creek. You'll want to be seriously fit to ride this thing the entire way, and if you're tired coming back, it can be pretty sketchy on some of the exposed sections and talus fields. But it is a glorious ride -- spectacular scenery and unrelenting singletrack.

Customer Service

Take the Arlington exit off from I-80 about 40 miles west of Laramie. Head to the west side of the interstate and follow the signs to the trail head (about 2 to 3 miles off from the interstate).

There's a trail from Sand Lake to Brooklyn Lake (on Wyo 130) that's truly wonderful too. We did a car shuttle once, from Brooklyn Lake to Sand Lake to the bottom of Rock Creek -- over 30 miles of back country single track. There was also about 150 miles of driving (yuck).
