Blackwater Canyon Circle Loop - Trail, Hendricks, Virginia

The Blackwater Canyon Circle Loop is a 32 mile bike loop with a 1500 foot height change that will take you in a complete circle around the beautiful , and endangered, Blackwater Canyon. There are numerous canyon views and three different waterfalls. Almost all of the loop riding surface is rail-trail, forest road or paved road. The main uphill section of the trip is on the Blackwater Canyon Trail who's grade is no steeper than 3%.

The ride begins at Hendricks WV. Park at the trailhead for the Allegheny Highlands Trail on Route 72. Bike up the Blackwater Canyon Trail to where it intersects with Douglas Road. Take Douglas Road to the Mountain Made Artisan Gallery's parking lot. During hunting season be sure to use the detour. Get on the old Davis Branch rail bed in the south-west corner of the parking lot. In two miles you will have to cross a reclaimed field and catch back up with the rail bed on the other side. At Pendleton Lake leave the old branch line and enter Blackwater Falls State Park. Take the park road across the Blackwater River to Forest Road 13 (Canaan Loop Road) which runs along the eastern edge of the canyon. Stay on the forest road until turning off onto Forest Road 244. That roads ends at State Route 72 which will take you back to the beginning of the loop in Hendricks.
