Putnam St. Forrest - Trail, Waterbury, Vermont

Putnam St. Forrest - Trail, Waterbury, Vermont

DESCRIPTION

This is Perry Hill. This ride starts with a climb on a sandy, steep double track. On your way up you will pass thru a few intersections, just keep rolling. After about 15-20 minutes you will cross some rock work. This is a good place to regroup. Shortly after this the climb turns left, off of the double track and on to some nice single track. After a few minutes you will pass a trail on your left. Remember this trail, you will come back for it after the descent. It''s what we call Joe''s (the builder) and it is sick, but just go right by it for now. Shortly after you pass Joe''s you will start rolling along, then the climb turn right and starts up for the last time. This turn is burned in as the main route, but in the fall it could be easy to miss. Don''t miss this next turn to the right. If you start going down you went too far. Make the right onto Burning Spear. This single track is high speed tech down. After about 8-10 minutes, you will splash thru a small stream, don''t miss the next left. If you find yourself rolling down a double track, you missed it. Make the left onto Rasta Man. This trail continues to flow down and buffs out a bit. There are some short steep climbs so be ready to throw some downshifts. After a steep sandy leafy chute, look for a big roll down on the left. It basically cuts off a switch back and flows right back into the trail. Continue to bomb down to the Hwy, be aware of a couple small DJs. Climb out for a few minutes and you will find yourself on the sandy double track you first rode in on, just after the first steep pitch. Turn right and climb the same route you did the first time, this time turn left on Joe''s. This trail is not easy. If you are not OK with steep and rocky lines and small roll downs, then please walk the sections you are not gonna ride. Please don''t ride around the difficult sections. As it is, there are many go-arounds that detract from the experience. For years this trail remained tight and tech., now it is hard to tell the right line from the lame one. At the bottom of this trail, stay right and it will flow into a few more short but extremely fun singletracks that put you back down near your car. Explore these lower singletracks for some great bonus loops that can be ridden after Rasta Man by those not up to another climb, or the tech. challenges of Joe''s. Watch the water bars on the road bed out to the car, people have been seriously injured (broken necks and legs) on the way out. The trails don''t officially open until June 1, but most folks start riding way before that. If you are in there early season, be extremely low impact. Most of these trails dry out fast, but some spots on the climb, and Joe''s stay wet. WALK if you are leaving a rut please. Impact is the issue that will get thgis opening date strickly enforced, and that would suck. Enjoy this place. It is a gem, and it is legal.

One of the top trail systems that I've ridden in VT. The climb up can burn, but it's soooo worth it! Lots of challenging drops, good flow and enough to make a full day of riding. If you've not been there before it would be wise to go with someone (probably should anyway) so they can show you the best route. Part of the system is pretty rocky and others nice and smooth..something for everyone!
