Erwin Park - Trail, Mc Kinney, Texas

Erwin Park - Trail, Mc Kinney, Texas

DESCRIPTION

Large loop the splits in middle so you can do either half really easy. Has everything but real step climbs. Crrek crosses can be tough on expert loop. I think its one of the best around North Dallas. Dorbaorg uses this trail for races regluarly.

One of the best trails in the dorba system. It's not overly technical -- any intermediate rider should be able to clear the entire trail without too much trouble. That said, this trail has a large amount of abrupt elevation changes and some moderate climbing and downhill sections that are a blast to ride by Dallas standards. This trail is more than the some of it's parts -- nothing stands out but it's fun from beginning to end. Most of it is very fast and there are no rocks. My only complaint is that in a few sections there are trees very close in to the trail and that it is a bit short.

Customer Service

There is only one route, except in the 'expert loop' where you can take the blue side (and if you're up for it, do loops). Make sure you do the whole trail, there is a bailout near the parking lot that cuts off the last three miles.

Lots of tree roots. Tight twisty sections through the woods. Some nice straight-aways through the fields. Nothing really technical. Just have to remember that what goes down must come up! For example, you can get going 20+ mph through a field, but then the trail turns around and there'll be a climb!

I ride a titanium hard tail, and will be getting a ThudBuster seat post soon because of this trail. For this trail, you have to make sure everything is tightened down and secure on your bike, or else you'll lose something. I've had cleats come loose on my shoes, and have lost stuff from zippers coming unzipped (from Camelback, and from seat bag). I also recommend a chain-stay guard.

I wouldn't expect anyone to average more than 12 mph for the whole trail. I rode 2 loops today (August 3rd) and averaged 10 mph with it being 100+ degrees outside (I think the high today was 107).

Overall I like this trail and would rate it 7.5 out of 10. I wish there were some more technical drops and climbs (there are a couple, but nothing exciting). It is well maintained and I've never seen it with debris or foliage covering the trail. I would recommend this trail to anyone in the McKinney area (it is ~25 miles from where I currently live).

Customer Service

Only one route to take, the loop is about 8 miles.

The trail is ~8 mile loop with various features. You'll go through some fast sections on a slight downhill grade, then have to climb back up on a slight uphill grade. Nothing difficult, but lots of tree roots that will get aggravating when going through the woods. Go to www.dorba.org to check out more info on the trail.

I typically go to Erwin Park once a week, plus this year (2008) the Ultracentric will be held there (www.ultracentric.net). I ride this trail on a hardtail with ease, and it can be pretty fun.

I personally prefer Rowlett Creek trails since it's closer to me (I live in Richardson) and there is more to ride there, although I would consider Erwin more of a cardio workout.

Customer Service

There is only one loop at Erwin. You can cut out half the loop by going on the paved road where the singletrack loop crosses.

Awesome trail. The first time I rode it I hated it. I guess it was cold and the wind was howling and coming out of the north and the open fields sucked. So I gave it another chance and am I glad I did. I love this trail and I find that it is my second favorite trail that I ride every week. I love the flow of it. You have open fields where you can haul ass. Trees to go thru and lots of roots. Their are some great dips that are a really good roller coster ride. A few downhills and there is a section in the open fields where you can get some air. Some switchbacks and some logs to jump over. It's about 8.4 miles and you could probably do it twice. It takes me about 57 minutes to get thru and that includes the expert section.

Customer Service

There is only one route until you get ot the expert section and an intermediate rider can make it thru there.

I really enjoyed this ride (twice around). Excellent trail conditions. Nice mix of speed, technical, and spinning. Loved the dips and the infield. My only complaint is that a few trees were left too close to the trail, making it dangerous to carry any speed through a number of sections.

Customer Service

As most others have stated, this is really an excellent trail - the only two drawbacks that I can find are that it is too short (about 8 miles total) and that there are no challenging climbs (unavoidable though since it is in Texas). I have been riding this trail for the past two years since I moved here from Southern CA. At first I hated it, especially all the roots and because it is so flat (relatively speaking,) but now I can't get enough of it. It is a good worout if you do two full loops including the expert section. I have also done this trail several times at night and I must say that it is AWESOME! The park is open until 10:00PM and you can start at 8:00PM and do one or two loops no problem - the parts through the forest (about 80% of the trail) are fantastic at night and a some extra spice if you are bored riding this trail in the day time. You need a very good light supply however so you can see everything you need to at night, especially in the technical and expert sections. It is also extremely twisty, so I would not recommend handle-bar mounted lights - I have found the helmet-mounted to work best here. Overall a really fun trail.

Customer Service

Whole thing, include the expert section if you can.
