Devil's Den (Daniel's Road) - Trail, Saratoga Springs, York

Devil's Den (Daniel's Road) - Trail, Saratoga Springs, York

DESCRIPTION

Although people have been calling this "Daniels Road Trail" or "The Stables", it was always called DEVIL'S DEN by those of us that originally built those trails back in the late '70's, early '80's. Some double track, but mostly single track.. some portions are very technical, great training for any race!! The trails have been well kept and in good shape. A new trail looks like it's under construction and from what I could see, should be done by the mid to end of summer. Cool!!

First of all, it should be noted that this is a riding area that requires a use fee.. SMBA members only - call 587-0455 for information.. A great variety of trails here, with impeccable maintenance throughout.. Lots of cool single track scattered with generous amounts of rocks and slickrock.. Some drops, couple stunt like things such as 2x6 A-frame over log and plank drop.. The natural trail obstacles are the highlight though, tons of cool rollers ranging from 5 feet to 20 feet.. So many cool rocks to play on, I doubt you will make it out before dark.. The singletrack trails travel through some very scenic areas around marsh like pond areas with dead trees. Some pine needle singletrack in between the good rocky stuff.. Purple on map was bad - just double track, didnt see any side trails, so skip em, they are not marked anyway..

Just a quick note:
This trail has been called "Daniels Road" or "The Stables" but when my friends and I started riding and helping to build some of these trails back in the early 80's we always called it DEVIL"S DEN. I don't see many of my 30-something compatriots out there anymore and it's a shame, but I do see the trails getting bigger and getting alot of use. Which is great!! I think it's also great that the folks at Saratoga Mountain Bike Association have kept the trails open for all of us to use. I remember getting chased out of there by the Sheriff when I was a kid and even seeing logs and wire strung across the trail to keep us out. So kudos to them and let's all join the club so we can keep riding!!

Same as "Daniels Road" review. Yeah, you're right Jeff, I'm a 30-something and I always remembered it being called "DEVIL'S DEN" too. But we used to ride dirt bikes and mini-bikes in there back then. Mt. biking hadn't caught on yet. Wow, am I getting old?
Well, lucky for everyone that these made great Mt. bike trails and inspired more to be built!!!

I have not ridden this trail very often. I decided one day to visit the trail by myself. Luckily, I brought my cell phone with me. I ended up on the new trails without realizing it at the time and got a little disoriented right before dark. I couldn't find my way back to the original trails since none of these trails are marked with colored ribbons for exits. I ended up going round and round the trails in the dark looking for an exit. I take some of the blame because I did not have a flashlight, food, ample water supply, compass, and was not real familiar with the trails. Of course, I did not expect to be in the woods after dark. Fortunately, I was able to get through with my cell phone but it loses signal and uses the battery up real quick. My friend, who is a woodsmen and more familiar with this trail found me. The two of us also had difficulty finding our way out of this maze on this dark, moonless night. I did enjoy the trail and would attempt it again with a friend and supplies. I am giving it a rating of 4 instead of a 5 because the trails aren't marked very well.

Great trail for everyone from beginner to advanced. Not too long, not too short, and it's very well maintained. Couldn't ask for a better trail.

In regards to Stan's review...please remember when you enter into a trail system that you did not pay for, or may be trespassing on, please note that there is no blame for anything that should happen to you that you can put on anyone else but yourself. Mountain Biking SHOULD be a sport where you can get seriously lost because the trails should be going into the MOUNTAINS and they should wander through the environment without concerns for lawyers and people that like to post blame on others. Please consider this and the consequences of all our trail systems getting shut down if we look to blame others besides ourselves for our own mistakes.

Trails not being marked are to keep people out that don't belong back there, or don't have enough sense to learn the trails in the daylight.
