wells state park - Trail, sturbridge, Massachusetts

DESCRIPTION

short steep uphills. Technical sections throughout the trail. Some good technical downhills. Mostly rocky with an occasional relief of smooth single track. Ask other riders to direct you to the single track downhill or as the locals say the mass pike trail. This is about 3miles starting s long double track uphill whcich turns to a fast steep single track. You end up cliffside of walker pond with an excellent view if you dont' crash in while riding.

I live in St. Urbridge, so I can't bash Wells. It's fun, but very quick. I (an advanced novice) can do the main loop plus a couple of the side loops in under an hour.

Park in Lot. Go back out, take a left at the gate onto the fire road (water on right). Cross the powerlines. Look for a blue blaze on the right, 50m after crossing the lines. Follow blazes into park, it's a good warm up for some good (bad) climbs up carpenters rock.

At the beginning when entering the trail on the fire road you will come upon a few large arrows pointing left. Go straight past them for abou 100 yards and follow a great new single track some locals have cut in. It adds another 2 mi and is great.

Customer Service

Just follow the white arrows and hold on.

new trail that some locals must have cut it starts at the top of the fire road which is called carpenters rock and as you go down yyou will see the flags on the right stay right of the flags and it is a 1 mile of sweet single track downhill the trail rules lots of steeps and stone walls to air it out on.

Customer Service

follow the green flags on the right of the trail as soon as you enter.

Wouldn't call this advanced by any means. More of a solid intermediate trail. Our 'posse' is always looking for adavanced and technical rides, and we've almost given up on reviews and recommendations - it seems that most people start screaming 'advanced & technical' if they see 1 or 2 pebbles in their way! We started asking for trails that are more like 'trials' riding - that seems to get the point across. Not knocking on Wells; it's a decent ride but nothing spectacular. I would consider the rockier sections at Lynn Woods a good technical ride but still not extreme... close, but no cigar! Don't get me wrong - Lynn is an excellent ride!
I hate to do this, but I'm not willing to give out some secret locations for great rides to the 'masses' - worried about some bozos hurting theirselves or someone else and getting biking banned at these spots which would really blow... write to my email and maybe I can pass some riding locations on.

not bad for a quick ride not to big though
i found it to be ok other than the fact you can easily get sidetracked into no mans land and have to turn around and come back the same way

How some of the people who rode this trail gave it 5 tires is beyond me. Have you been to Lynn or Vietnam? There are bad, good and spectacular, and this trasil is a fun ride if you live in the area, but by no means is it a 5 tire trail. I rode it about 8 months ago, but waited untill I had many other trails to compare it to to rate it. I'd give it a 3 because it was okay, but it's small and i have to bring the average rating down becasue of the dudes who think this trail is a five.

Customer Service

It's not huge, just ride around and you will find trails that are good.

Not a bad ride but it is too short and not close to anything. One of the greatest tempo climbs I've riden is here, but the fact that this is a sub-10 mile system of trails leaves you virtually no options.

Customer Service

Start at Parking lot, head back up drive towards entrance, turn left onto Jeep trail and begin search for trailhead on left.

To add on to the original ride take the fire road just before the entrance(on the left if you are exiting)continue( about a mile or so) past the trails on the left until you see a wide fire road like, but rocky trail on your right. you can follow this for a while. It is not extremely difficult, but does offer a couple of small rock gardens and has trails that branch off and it adds to an otherwise short ride. About 3 miles or so on there is an intersection, you can take a right and it takes you up a short steep climb to "high rocks" that gives a good view of the lake and rest of the park or you continue straight, i have no idea where it goes from there. To return you must double back, but the majority of it is a gradual descent and you can pick up some good speed w/ jumps and other obstacles.

Customer Service

there are a number of routes that can vary the your ride from 7 to 10 miles, it all depends on what you like.
