manhattan zoo - Trail, Manhattan, Kansas

DESCRIPTION

the steepest and most technical climbs and descents in manhattan. the path has steps which if you don't watch it over the bars you go. the trail goes all the way down to the river and has several options, some sicker than others. not the best maintained trail, but definately a place to work on your skills.

Sunset Zoo Trail is a fun little 3 mile singletrack in the middle of Manhattan. It has had more traffic and maintenance done as of recent, and the local trail building crew is planning on cleaning up the lower section in order to make it a complete, non-confusing loop within the next month or two. Lots of stairs and descents if you enter from the right trailhead, if you don't then it's not gonna be near as fun. Lots of technicality and you're riding on the side of an insanely steep, wooded hill (could probably just call it a cliff honestly) so taking a spill could have some major consequences.

Customer Service

Enter from the parking lot at Sunset Zoo. To the north is the cemetery. Ride in from the north of the water tower, along the path that is in between the rock wall of the cemetery and the chain link fence of the zoo. You'll enter and go down a few sets of steep stairs, and then there will be a 'TRAIL' sign. Enter the trail at the sign and go left. Would be easiest to go to Big Poppi's in Aggieville to get the suggested route, otherwise you won't have as much fun.

The trail was pretty fresh, like no one had ridden it in atleast one year. Alot of tornado damage... IE logs that are all piled up that you have to climb over. But was a decent in town ride, short but enough to make you get that funny feeling. Steps were in good condition, and was not rutted out. But ends abruptly at the creek, wish it kept going for alittle while longer. But over all condition was good, keep in mind of hikers. Didn't see any while down hilling, but as we were leaving a bunch of kids were going hiking. Up hill sucked!!!

lots of steps, leaves, rocks and steeep descents. there is one route with steps i have not tried yet, anyone who does let me know how you do it, the steps are insanely steep, you'll know when you see it.
very technical, great practice. 5 for difficulty, 2 for maintenance

Customer Service

once, down the steps, go down to the path and head left, as you head down hill, take a 160 degree right turn for an excellent ride along a path, just don't fall to your left or down the hill you go.

I didn't think that I would find hills this steep in Manhattan. If you ride left along the fence, you can ride all the way to the bottom of the hill and end up in the residential area. There are some good loop-backs here. Riding along the fence will also give you a good view of the lions and mountain goats. If you travel right, along the treeline, you head down the really steep part and end up by the river. The trails near the bottom are poorly maintained but it is still fun anyway. Once you get to the river, turn around and go back up the hill- there isn't anything down there except deadfall. This is a good trail to work on technical riding (i.e. going up and down very steep inclines).

Customer Service

As you get to the zoo, stay right. Go behind the water tower and down the steps. Ride along the path. As you get to the end of the fence, you can either travel along the fence to the left (it doesn't really look like a path), or to the right. Either way will lead to steep decents.

This place offers stairs, a retaining wall at the north end, and many routes down and across the hill. The best ride is riding north along the hill and then back south where you'll ride by the zoo before you can blast down a long set of stairs to the bottom. Then I recommend heading along Linear Park to Westloop for some freeriding stuff there. This place is great! It has a little of everything but the ideal place has more of the same.

Customer Service

Just look for the water tower at the zoo and go west between the zoo and cemetary.

I started at the zoo the first time I rode it, rode down all those dern stairs and got all the way to the bottom to find out it goes to a road, if you turn right on the road, The new Linear Trail is 10 feet to the right. So you can get to the bottom of this trail if you start Linear Trail at Anderson Ave. Ride until the fork in the trail. A sign says Linear Trail to the (arrow right) if you go left it leads to the road I was talking aout, then this trail starts 10 feet to the left off the road.
This is a pretty tough trail, especially if you start on the bottom and ride UP the stairs. Maintainance is poor, lot's of leaves on the trail, causes me to lose the trail sometimes

Customer Service

I've riden it about 3 times now, and I haven't riden the same route any of the times. I always think I'm lost, but I always end up at the road at the bottom.
