Lake County Forest Preserve - Trail, Wauconda, Illinois

DESCRIPTION

Decent trail for a short ride. Although its fairly short, it has some fun hills and nice scenery. I recommend the trails to the west of Ivanhoe rd.

Singletrack with great potential. Would be great if maintained by a mountain bike organization such as cambr. Trails are legal but I am not sure if they are maintained for biking. Lots of good hills.

For a trail in the Lake County Forest Perserve system, this is a gem in the rough! It has all the prospects for being a great 5 mile bike park, can't really say mtbing trail, because of all the different directions you can go, and some hitting deadends. It has all the attributes of a mtbing trail with varying elevation and singletrack enviroment. Trail has some wide spots to some where the handlebars just fit between the trees. Not sure if this is a legit trail, but it is beaten in pretty good and is smooth with very few spots of erosion. If you need to get your fix from the 35' wide trails the forest perserve does, this would be the spot for you. The trail is really based around creek or ravine that whines through the western side of the perserve. It must drain very well, because we had quite bit rain the last couple of days and the trail was pretty dry considering.
There are roots and logs, some really big logs, for some technicality for the ride along with some plunging down hill legs with a sharp left or right turns at the bottom. There is also some skinnes that cross over culverts and dug in run offs. Overall, I would love to see some loops be carved in so you don't hit so many dead ends, but it did get my fix for today and for the future to come.

Customer Service

All I can say for a route is just head west from the parking lot that is on the right side of the fork once you enter the perserve from rt 176. I parked at a playground and pickuped the main trail heading west and as your riding you can see where the singletrack takes off from the main trail.

The best part of this FP is the millennium trail that starts east of Fairfield Rd. and winds nortward to Volo. The trail connects to the North Shore Path on the east side with some hilly fun at the end of Lakewood FP. The north end continues to grow, it crosses Fish Lake Rd. and runs through a new subdivision ending shortly after.
Other than the Millennium Trail, Lakewood does have a wide variety of trails, Wide limestone, dirt and grass paths and if you keep your eyes open there are dirt singletracks through the forests.

Go to these trails if you can.

Customer Service

This set of trails is the best that I have ridden so far in Illinois. Take the entrance that leads to the museum and stay to the right, park in the first lot you can, and head west. There is about 5 miles of hilly singletrak with some technical downhill and climbing.
