Lake Springfield - Trail, Springfield, Illinois

Lake Springfield - Trail, Springfield, Illinois

DESCRIPTION

Rooty, plenty of climbs, and fast in some areas. From trailhead/parking area go over the concrete fishing bridge for a mile to mile and a half loop. The wider 1.27mi trail connects from near the generator station around a lake cove and connects to the Springfield to Chatham bike path. Turn right at the paved bike path and go about a quarter mile north and there is another loop at the wooden map station, its approximately the same length as the first loop.

The Lake Springfield Trail Is very Rooty and can be technical at times. Its about 5 or 6 miles if you combine east and south legs. In some parts it runs right next to the lake. Under heavy rainfall, the creek that runs into the lake will flood, making some parts unpassable. It is a moderate test of endurance, with hills and some close encounters with trees, it will test your riding ability.

Although it has some very rooty hills, it also has flat, slow rolling areas that are good for beginners as well as expierienced riders. It definatley deserves a fairly high rating because it is some of the best riding in and around springfield, giving you all sorts of suprises.

South on veterans parkway (rt. 4) take a left on woodside (spaulding orchard rd) go to 2nd light by train tracks. there is a rocky parking lot on your right, in front of the train tracks. Head south on your bike and hit the paved chatham bike trail. about 1/4 mile down on your right there is a brown wooden sign. that is the trail entrance to the east leg of the trail. just ride all the way, it leads to a bridge and the south trail.

I have fun here, i usually ride the trails around a few times usually totalling about 12mi after im done in about two hours. Usually a tree or two down at all times but its still a fun place to ride, its kept trimmed back almost all of the time. Plenty of true singletrack and a good workout. If you need a guide or someone to ride with PM me about a day before.
