alexander reservior - Trail, kalaheo, Hawaii

DESCRIPTION

Out and back dirt road, no significant branches. Dry and well maintained for the first 3 miles. After the reservoir expect very sticky slippery mud and deep ruts. Best during a dry spell. After 6 miles up you are on the top of Mt. Kahili, then you can go down. Beautiful views possible.

Consider this trail closed. I started to ride up to the reservoir during my trip here in January, 2014. Just before the reservoir, after about 4 km of steady climbing I encountered two security guards who were quite friendly but made it clear that this is private property (A&B Properties) and they were not allowing anyone to use the trail. It seems like a new development - they said next week there would be six security guards assigned to the area, which seems like a bit of overkill to me but, hey it's not my property (or $ being spent on security.) Like I said they were friendly and I turned around and had a blast bombing downhill for 4km back to the road but I guess riding there is not possible anymore.

While on the south coast I spent a lot of time riding Mahaulepu - both cane roads and the trail that follows the ocean. The ocean trail is technical and you will encounter a lot of hikers so be respectful but the views are amazing and riding the beach at Gillin's Beach and Ha'ula was great fun. To get to Ha'ula Beach, don't try going around the fence post against the cliff like the hikers do. There's a horse gate a short distance from the ocean. Use it but make sure to close it behind you.

A trippy place to ride if you can handle a lot of MUD. This trail is a great argument for renting a bike instead of bringing one. You're going to need a serious hose-off if you make it to the top. Excellent views though... About as remote a place as you can get to without a helicopter... Lots of orchids, ferns and stuff like that. Trippy as I said.

I prefer the "back way"... even though it's SUPER MUDDY 20 minute climb and the recommended route is much drier. To get there, go to the top of Puuwai Road in Kalaheo, look for a little "Government Property" dirt road and start riding (there's no gate, but don't drive down it). You'll want to go right when you reach the main road. Watch out for pig hunters and horse back riders (who are cool if you get off your bike and give them right of way). My ratings apply to this route. I'm not into the other way.
