Timberline - Trail, Makakilo, Hawaii

Timberline - Trail, Makakilo, Hawaii

DESCRIPTION

Timberline is a private nature Camp located at the top of Makakilo drive. It was once only hiking trails but thanks to the hard work of the guys at Shaka Bike in Kapolei, there is now a good start of a trail system. In order to ride there, you need to go to Shaka and fill out a waiver, it will cost you 20 bucks for the year and 2 bucks each time you go up. Sounds like a hassel and it can be, but Jordan and his wife will meet you if need be to get your papers filled out and get you the code. Yes there is a coded gate that you must pass. This is nice, as you know your stuff is not going to be pilfered like at Manana or other places. There is a good XC type trail that is fairly well cut, and several other freeride/DH areas that will suit just about anyone. There are many washes that provide flowing drops and ledges with good clear landings. This will be a premier place to ride if there can be more interest generated. There are also great views of Nanakuli Valley as well as the whole Wainea Coast over Ko''olina. I would recommend these trails to any who are interested in technical, varied terrain, who want a good workout mixed with some pretty hardcore freeride and downhill. You can get by with 3-4 inches of travel but 6 will make this place plush. I am riding a Cannondale Prophet and did well. Give the guys at Shaka a call if you want to ride.

DOWNHILL. Once you take the lift up the mountain (weekend)there are several ways to go, 2 strait ahead into the pines, 1 left side behind lift, 1 right side behind lift leading to a Slalom. Im pretty sure there are a few more but that all I did. Each start off is very unique and will lead to many choices of different trail marked by different colored arrows. Not much man made stuff, besides banks, but many natural challenges such as boulders and wall rides. The staff and volunteers there are all really nice and helpful and seem ecstatic to get this downhill mnt biking resort to be the best it can. I had the chance to ride with them for a bit, and it was a great time.

The slalom is a relatively smooth fast track with 1 huge bank, and leads to some great lower paths, I was only there for a day, so I cant give you a detailed way I loved, because I was a bit confused of where I was at times. But the people there are real nice, so they can direct you, just ask.

Go with someone who knows they trail, grabbed a map at the base and there were some areas that did not jive on the way down. Rode up to the bunker, it was cloudy which killed the view, it was hike a bike up to the top, downed trees to scramble over in differant parts on the way up, down was a blast. Disc brakes saved my bacon a couple times on the way down.

Awesome trail, one of the best, if not the best, that I have ridden in HI. The steep push up is worth the steep ride back down. There are lots of little hidden drops to find and play in so enjoy searching. If you are planning on going up ride with someone who has ridden it before or you may get lost.
