Aiea Loop Trail - Trail, Aiea, Hawaii

Aiea Loop Trail - Trail, Aiea, Hawaii

DESCRIPTION

One of the most popular trails on Oahu. It is a loop trail which runs along the ridges overlooking central Oahu with beautiful views of Pearl Harbor and Halawa Valley. There are a few pieces of an old plane wreck about two and a half miles in. Many parts of the trail are boardered by cliffs, so care is essentail. During wet periods, the trail is dangerous and prone to erosion, so do not ride when wet.

Sadly, this trail is now CLOSED to mountain biking. I hiked it with my wife a few weeks ago and there is a new sign at the trail head that prohibits mountain bikes. VERY disappointing, as this was a challenging, fun trail to ride.

This is a very root filled trail and I do not recommend it for mtn biking. It has beautiful views for hiking but is not suitable for mountain biking.

Don't do it!!! From all the reviews, I expected it to be a let down, but I tried it anyways. I waited for a dry day, but that didn't help. It is mostly insane roots and impossible trees. The whole first section is massive roots. Every time I got settled in and got going good, a massive tree would appear across the trail. The kind of tree that would force you to haul your bike over the top while I crawled underneath. I spent more time carrying my bike than riding. It would be a great trail for a run or hike. Amazing views and a great bench to chill half way through.

Customer Service

Leave you bike attached to the car and move on.

This is a nice 4.5 mile trail that starts out at the top of the loop. The first 1/4-1/2 mile is full of roots and my require walking a bit. Once you get past the roots, you will be on a scenic trail that follow the top of a ridge. Views as far as the eye can see.

This trail was covered with roots and 1-3 foot drop offs of roots and hardpacked clay to mud. Made the mistake of starting the ride after 5pm and ended up hiking out with the aid of a small light. Watch out for over a dozen fallen trees that completely block off the trail, some have notches cut in them for climbing over. If you are looking to improve your technique of technical ascending/descending this trail has about half of it rideable. Good views of the ocean and mountains can be had as well as plenty of tree cover for shade. All in all I'd say good for advanced riders and would be a hike-a-bike for more beginner/intermediate riders.

As stated, take Aiea Heights rd to the top, when you hit the recreation area keep going up, when you see the restrooms veer left the trail starts there and keeps going up. Stay on the main trail and when you come to the fork about half way stay right to be on the trail(Left goes off into "hiking land") you will know you are on the right trail when it gets really muddy/slippery. Trail comes out just below restroom area. Enjoy the ride back down Aiea heights Rd.(45 MPH+).

This trail is all roots-if you are thinking about riding it just hike it first to see what you are up against. The begining of the trail has huge drops and must be walked down because at the bottom of the dropoff is about 50-75 feet of huge roots that cannot be navigated.

Customer Service

I recommend a different trail.

A little wet today and a little slick...wait, really slick, wait until it's pretty dry or you will spend your ride slipping over roots(trail has a ton of them). Forget going uphill when it is wet and hike it, dry and those that love technical ascents will love this. If you have any skills then going downhill should be no problem wet or dry, just take it slow when wet to ensure that you dont plunge down the side of a cliff. This entire trail runs on the side of a mountain with the edge of the track being a drop of anywhere between 100 and 200 feet depending on where you are. I personally wont ride it again unless it's dry, but either way I had a lot of fun. Decending the trail was a blast, I was going really cautious like, but the downhill part is almost half the trail. You spend the first half of the ride going uphill and the second half going downhill followed by a half mile hike up to the end of the loop.(too wet to ride) Have fun, definately give it a try.

Uh, look this trail wasn't what I expected. Of course I should have paid closer attention to the prior reviews, but I didn't. Less than a mile in it's all roots, okay if you have full suspension or a decent fork, but not for middle and lower end bikes. If I were you, just don't do it right now, unless you are really pumped. It reminded me of something out of those hard core biker videos from BC, I might be a wimp but I turned around after a mile. You will not clean the downhill of this trail, if you do, you should be a pro.

Yes---very very rooty with steep dropoffs on the side---yet if you've been riding much at all you will not find it extreme. But there is a lot of hike a bike due to felled trees, if it's been raining, and the one big rutted area not far from the start. There are way more fun places to ride on Oahu--therefore only 3 fat tires overall.

Customer Service

It's a loop. But be sure where it branches to stay on the loop or you'll end up in a military land nav restricted area.
