Buffalo Pass Divide Loop - Trail, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Buffalo Pass Divide Loop - Trail, Steamboat Springs, Colorado

DESCRIPTION

Bring ample water and food, this is an all day event. The climb up is looong. I went down a few times on Fishkill, very rocky/technical including some stream crossings. Beautiful vistas, plenty of singletrack once you get off Buffalo Pass Road. You could do a shuttle if you have 2 cars but I was solo. Get a map of the area in town to plan the route.

It may have been singletrack once upon a time but it's an ATV trail now. 1101 Trail (Wyoming Trail), which leaves the horse trailer parking lot at the Buffalo Pass summit as described previously, was obviously gorgeous single track at one time but is no longer. According to the signs it is legally open to motos.

As of last week (July 1 '07) there was quite a bit of deadfall across the trail, to the point about 6 miles in where it just got frustrating. Huge piles of trees across the trail. Perhaps the ATV folks are carrying a chainsaw - there was evidence of recent saw cuts.

My suggestion if you decide to ride this - check with the LBS re: trail conditions, and don't expect singletrack. It's still exceptionally beautiful country but seeing what the ATVs have done to that trail will really torque you. If I'd realized ahead of time that the ATVs were there legally I wouldn't have spent the ride so PO'd, just sad at the sacrifice of a gorgeous trail.

I was lazier than the other reviewers - drove to the top of the pass, rode 1101 Trail to the junction, down to the lake and then took the jeep road back to the pass. It was a lark of a loop - all above 10K' but other than the altitude nothing tough.

This route continues on to Dumont Lake and also links up with a trail that heads to Mt. Werner on the ski hill. I didn't feel like dealing with more deadfall so didn't try either option, but if the trails are clear they'd be plenty o' fun. Again, check with the LBS.

I posted this trail, screwed up the name of fishkill, s/b fish creek falls as noted. Ran out of gas to do Mtn View up to the resort - likely an excellent route. If going that way, Pete's to Valley View in my opinion.

Customer Service

Fish Creek is great if you want full on technical, mostly people hike it, but if you have some skills I would do it.

All the north stuff, stop by the forest service hq near the super 8 east of town for maps/advice. 1101 I recall as a good one. Head up near Hinmann/Seedhouse.

The trail down in this review is Fish CREEK Falls trail (not Fish Kill Falls)

A better ride is as follows: Ride up Buffalo Pass Road (as noted) when you get to the pass turn right toward Fish Creek and Long Lake Reserviors. About 1/4 from the intersetion, go into the parking area to the left (typically horse trailers park here), the Wyomining Trail takes off up the hill. About 5 miles of nice single track to a four-way intersection. Take a right down to Long Lake then along the north side of the lake. This connects into Fish Creek Falls Trail. Go down Fish Creek Falls Trail about 1/2 mile, then take the trail to the left (Mountain View Trail). The Mountain View Trail will take you to the top of Steamboat Ski Area (about 6 miles from intersection). From the top of the Ski area, turn left on the service road until you come to Pete's Wicked Trail. From Pete's you have several options of trails to ride down. The total loop from downtown Steamboat is about 45 miles. Take plenty of H2O and food (along with the usual long ride "be prepared" stuff). A small water pump/ filter is more efficent than taking all the water you need. Start early and have fun.

it's like nice single track at first and then after 2 miles it turns to narly hiking trail and is very hard to decend bring a full face helmet. its more hiking trail than mtb trail

Customer Service

when you get to the top of buffs pass @summit lake you want to turn right and head for long lake/ fish creek resivor. about 10 min down the road you will pass the resivor and come to a gate in the middle of the road park there. ride around the gate and go down the road untill you see a switch back road on the right take it. you will go past a lake and it will funnel in to single track. the last turn you will have to make is a fork in the trail, go right (fishcreek falls trail 1102) enjoy the ride
