Suicide - Trail, Westlake Village, California

Suicide - Trail, Westlake Village, California

DESCRIPTION

This is a great DH trail. A lot of local racers practice here. There are plenty of drop-offs, and it's nice and steep. The whole thing is very technical. although it's a little short, it's an all around great trail.

I just purchased a freeride bike and wanted to try it out. First off the trail head has been moved from the end of King James to right off Lindero Canyon. Pass King James and go an additional 100 to 200 yards and you'll see a sign that says China Flat Trail head. This is the route that I used to access the Suicide trail. The climb is very technical and on this big bike it was entertaining. I ended up doing a lot of hike a bike. The decent was AWESOME! There are a lot of dirt jumps for you freeriders, but for non freeriders, be cautious not to hit one on accident, you'll learn that you can fly. Also this trail is not as steep as others have made it out to be, but it is very rocky in sections and was very grateful that I took my big bike. There are numerous extra credit sections for going down, and almost always a way to avoid them for you cross country kids. I can't wait to ride this trail again. It doesn't take long, so if you have a few hours and energy to burn you can ride this 2 or 3 times easily.

Through the gate up the road a few hundred feet and hang a left, there are 2 right hand turns you can make, both end up at the same place, I took the first one which was longer, but I was able to ride through the few switchbacks easily. Once at the top, you'll see the fire road you need to reach off to your left. Continue up a little more and you'll see that the single track connects with the fireroad. As you climb the fire road you'll notice it looks more like a single track. At the top the road is blocked off by a boulder "fence" and just past it a metal gate. To the right of the "fence" you'll see a single track going up. Climb that to the top and you can see the the suicide trail off to the left. Follow the single track up a little more and suicide drops off the top of the next peak. I followed the most obvious route, which got wider and wider as I went down. I ended up by a service yard and a parking lot, I took a right on the paved road out of the parking lot and up through Eagle View Park right to my truck. Online satellite imaging kept me from getting lost.

If you're in the mood for a technical ride, this is a good one. This review is written from a cross-country biker perspective. Downhillers may have a different opinion. If you follow the route I recommend, half of the trail is fairly technical uphill and the suicide portion is a very technical downhill. If you clean the uphill, I think you can consider yourself a good rider because it requires good technical skills, balance and the ability to stay focused. There are really only 3-4 obstacles of any consequence on the uphill, but they're good ones and they get progressively harder. The last two uphill obstacles are fairly close together and demand good lungs, good legs and good balance to clean them without touching your foot to the ground. Once you're at the top, enjoy the view and then forget about it because the downhill requires your attention. Most people will have to hike up the first 30 yards of the suicide trail since it's a steep, loose, rocky uphill (this is after you've climbed to the top of the trail known as 'Dead Cow'). Once at the top of that short section, there are some rocky bits that will cause a lot of cross-country bikers to wish they had a downhill bike and some body armor. The rest of the trail is generally quite steep with loose sections, baby-head rocks and some challenging dropoffs that can be measured in feet, not inches. There is one dropoff that is very tricky about 2/3 of the way down. The trail is very short, but is a decent lung workout on the way up and is challenging on the way down.

101 N. to Lindero Canyon. Go about 4 miles north on Lindero Canyon until you see the China Flat trailhead sign on the left side of the street. This is also known as the Dead Cow trail. Take Dead Cow all the way up, turning right at the first two main junctions. At the top, you'll be in front of an short, rocky uphill. This is the Suicide trailhead. Go up, go down, and have fun. Repeat as desired.

I love this trail, im on an xc but it's still a hell of a lot of fun when you figure out what line to take. When my new dh gets here this summer, i'll go crazy on this hill. The best part is the series of drop offs, they just keep coming! It's great! My only complaint is that it is a bit short, about 3-4 miles. I'm done in about 10 min. It takes twice that time to get there from my house. The other great thing about this trail is to get to it you have to take a greaty xc ride, it's a good warm up. 5 flaming chillys from me

Customer Service

I'm riding on an xc right now so I know quite a bit about which line to take. In the very beginning, by the huge rocky outcropping, go left. It's a tight squeeze but there's space for your tires to fit through two rocks. When you hit the drop offs, make sure you're looking ahead because they just keep coming. Finally, there's a section near the middle where the trail's angles seem to conflict each other three different ways. Stick towards the middle and hop over the end of that happy little area.

Theres a lot of nice new fire roads around now, but if you want to find the trailhead to every trail in socal, go to morrison. Every time I get lost or try a new trail, I end up there.

As this guy already knows, i didn't write that review at socalmtb.com. Aside from it's short length, I love suicide. Not too easy, not too hard, and there's never anyone there. It's a fun practice DH course.

What a fun trail. On getting to the Suicide trail head half the fun is cleaning the Dead Cow (I don't know where the name came from)climb. It can be done regularly just ask Gary. When you get to the top point it down and remember if you aren't scared you are going too slow!

Fun short DH run, lots of steep loose chutes with drop-offs. There is a couple technical rock drops and a 6' drop into a turn, also a couple of small doubles along with some burmed out turns. I would call this run advanced at speed. Short but sweet.
