Lake Poway - Trail, Poway, California

Lake Poway - Trail, Poway, California

DESCRIPTION

Intermediate Doubletrack, fireroad and singletrack. Mt Woodson trail loop is advanced and pretty tough. Many nearly impassable switchbacks on the downhills and going up is brutal. Lake Poway route is a fun intermediate route, but pretty quick.

Lake poway is not really super technical or super easy. It is a quick ride that leaves you wanting more. The trail has changed a lot in the past 6 months as they have done trail work. A lot of the rocks in the trail have been taken out and replaced with decomposed granite that improves drainage and decreases erosion. As a result, the trail is rather slippery. The trail is mostly single track but there are some fire roads and there is not a lot of shade on the trail. If you are wanting more you can hit up Mt. Woodson halfway around, or you could shuttle run woodson and do half of the lake.
Woodson is a different story. The top is technical with plenty of sharp corners, ledges, and surprises. As you work your way down it becomes super flowy and fast.

Customer Service

Normally I go around to the right on the fishing trail down by the lake thus avoiding the fire road and "hill". Halfway around the lake you hop on the fire road again until you get to the dam and get on the single track. First there is a descent with flowy switchbacks and then a climb back to the parking lot.

i liked the trail a lot. it has a nice uphill at the start, and a good .5 mile (thats what ths sign says) dowhhill after that. great doubletrack, must ride after a rain, the ruts make it a ton of fun. the hill at the start is a great training ground to practice the downhills due to its ruts, logs, and granite.

Customer Service

Start at the left of the snack bar and go up the trail. there is a fork right away, go left. go up the uphill. go to the right down the switchbacks. it says no bikes in blue sky. so turn right and go around the rest of the lake.

This trail is short and nothing but up and down for the first half of the ride. This was a challenging ride but spent the first half of the ride hiking up hill with my bike. Fun place to go for a change of pace but nothing special.

Starting from the parking lot take the high trail round the lake. Starting from opposite side of lake the trail is a tough climb with ruts/rocks. From there its ugly; sandy and rock strewn in brutal switchbacks that requires some portaging. Reward at the top is an outstanding view of Sandy Eggo and it's 21st century suburbia. The real reward is a brutal technical decent, but since you saw it on the way up its do-able. Last bit towards the lake is nasty as little drainage ruts sneak up and toss you on your arse; modulate your speed.

I found this trail one day while climbing Mt Woodson from Poway Lake. I'm new to the area and was just looking for a nice run. Go around Poway Lake and follow the Woodson signs for a ways. When you get to the fry koegel split - keep going the other way. In a bit you will come to a split that reads "Mt Woodson 1.8 mi." This is the beginning. You can only ride up a few sections..hike-a-bike. You come out on the fry-koegel trail after a brutal push/carry/ride up. You are about a half mile from the top. This is the intersection you need to remember so you can get it from the top. Do yourself a favor and avoid this trail if you don't like steep, f-ed up, rocky terrain. I won two 30-34 ex nationals last year and this run is way more technical than anything I saw. It's kinda like Squaw World Cup, but no fireroads. It 's kinda like taking all the f-ed up tech sections from every national track and rolling em all into 1.8 miles. Once you get situated, you can access this trail with a DH bike by pushing your bike up the steep access road from ramona to the top of Woodson. Drop in the trail - which is pretty tech - go about 4-5 minutes and watch for that turn-off....There are a few variations at the top, if you stay on the messed up section that seems to work the best. I don't care about exposing this trail since I have never seen any tracks on it. It kinda takes care of itself!

Customer Service

Poway Lake to Mt Woodson. If you have a DH bike, push it up the backside cable road. Their is a split off the trail about a mile in that will impress anyone.

The fry-koegel trail is really fun for hard-tailing if you don't feel like the messed up stuff. Fun sections with tecnnical switchbacks, very mild compared to its ugly cousin. RT

so steep and technical you cant ride up. so steep and technical you cant ride down either. If you can ride down this trail without putting your feet down it means your a pro and you would not be reading this review anyways.

This is not a trail for beginners, but you'll love this trail if you like steep climbs as I do. From the parking lot go to the opposite side of the lake and take the obvious wide uphill trail. Once the trail flattens out, look for the single track on the left. You can ride/(hike a bike) from here to a large Oak Tree (a great spot to fuel up and enjoy the view). Once you reach the summit ridge turn east ignoring the side trails down the North Flank. You can ride all the way from the Oak to near the top of Woodson. The way down is very technical with some extremely tight switchbacks.

This is a great lake to ride around. Nice hills with elevation gains and drops and turns. Leave your kids to fish, while you do a loop around the lake in 30 minutes. A very safe enviroment.
