Ortega Trail - Trail, Ojai, California

Ortega Trail - Trail, Ojai, California

DESCRIPTION

Rocks, rocks and more rocks. If you like it rocky, this is your trail. Uphill walking factor is maybe 25% due to loose rocks and moderate grade. The rocks continue for about 5 miles and then the trail becomes more level and meets up with a 4wd road at a primitive campground. This trail is open to motorcycles but they dont appear to use it much because it doesn't connect to anything else. As of Feb 2001 there is some brush starting to encroach on the trail in spots but nothing too bad. This trail could be shuttled by taking Hwy 33 up to the Cherry Canyon fireroad. Recommend 4" travel front and rear or prepare to be beat up severely. Very warm in the summer...carry extra water.

Back in business for the Ortega Trail. I wrote the original review on this back in 2001. Most of the brush has been cleared out but all of the rocks are still there. Still a challenge even with a 180mm fork.

Customer Service

Shuttle to Cherry, Ortega, climb 33 to Howard Creek Trail and finish with Gridley or Pratt.

Stinks right now (Summer 2001), way too overgorwn to enjoy. Needless to say there are a lot of rocks, more like a loose, rocky substrate. I only did 1/2 of this ride, quit and went up to Rose Falls. If you do want to attempt it you dont need a FS rig, it not that steep and I came across no dropoffs. Just use gracefull braking on the downs. I am really dissapointed at the trails in Ojai, a lot of overgrowth! There must of been no maintenance performed this year or the past. Dont waste you time here this Summer, it worth the trip to charge Santa Barbara rides or go south Ventura Co. (Chesebero or Sycamore). 2 stars for not making it possible to ride!
